Union Pier Cruise Terminal

The plan for development of the Charleston cruise ship terminal includes construction of a new building. It will be located at the Union Pier’s northern end. The old part of the building will be redeveloped. The Ports Authority will sell 0,15 km2 Union Pier property for private development right after the completion of the new terminal. This premium waterfront area will be developed as a new neighborhood and will be of no maritime use. It will feature new streets, public parks, shops, residential homes and businesses, thus increasing the access to the waterfront.

The concept plan also includes relocating of all cargo shipping operations from Union Pier. It will serve only as cruise pier.

The new passenger terminal’s construction will cost USD 35 million. Its opponents have sued in both state and federal courts. Public hearing was also called by the US Army Corps of Engineers after receiving a new federal permit for putting additional pilings beneath one of the old terminal’s warehouses.

It looks like Charlestonians want the cruises, but don’t want the new terminal to be located on the edge of the city’s historic district. Among their major concerns are the air quality and traffic congestion. The cruise port will have to install electric ship-to-shore power to reduce air pollution by docked vessels.

Carnival is also stepping up its health and safety measures due to the recent spread of the omicron variant. All passengers who are 2 years old and older must wear a face mask while indoors, except while in their own rooms. The cruise line’s new policy also requires guests to wear face masks “when outdoors if in large gatherings and physical distancing cannot be maintained.” Passengers will also be asked to wear a mask while getting on or off the ship and on any excursions.

Other cruise lines, like Norwegian and Royal Caribbean, have also tightened their mask policies.

Carnival also now “strongly suggests” that guests have a booster vaccination before their cruise.

South Carolina Ports Authority In Legal Battle For New Cruise Terminal At Port Charleston

The building of the first new container terminal in the USA in more than a decade is progressing in Port Charleston SC towards its opening in March 2021, South Carolina Ports announced. While the container terminal project is now moving forward, the South Carolina state is confronted by legal challenges for the broader plans for the redevelopment of another part of the citys waterfront including a new cruise terminal.

The new containership terminal will add 700,000 TEU-containers of annual throughput capacity to Port Charleston and the capability to handle 19,000-TEU boxships. By the time the project is completed, the 3-berth terminal will double SC Ports’ current capacity by adding 2,4 million TEUs of throughput capacity.

SC Ports engineering and construction teams reached several key building milestones as the terminal continues to take shape. Among the milestones was the concrete pour for the 1400-ft wharf which is due to accommodating 5 ship-to-shore cranes. The first 2 cranes are scheduled to arrive from China in September, with the remaining 3 arriving in October. The terminal will have 25 hybrid rubber-tired gantry cranes scheduled to arrive later in 2020.
