The Restart Is Underway
The restart of cruise operations is underway by multiple cruise lines already and more will begin resuming through the remainder of 2021. The two largest cruise lines for Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean have already restarted with a limited number of ships from the US as the situation theres is moving forward quickly.
The Celebrity Edge cruise ship owned by Royal Caribbean group became the first to restart operations with regular passengers from the US which departed on June 26 out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Freedom of the Seas, operated by Royal Caribbean International, was the first cruise ship to be approved for a test sailing at the end of June. That was then followed by the vessel resuming out of Miami, Florida on July 2, 2021.
When it comes to Carnival Cruise Line, as of July 21, a total of three ships have already restarted sailings. Carnival Vista was the first to resume in the fleet when she departed Galveston, Texas on July 3, 2021. Carnival Horizon was then the second in the fleet to resume when the ship departed out of Miami, Florida on July 4, 2021. Carnival Breeze was then the third in the fleet and resume from the Port of Galveston on July 15.
In Canada, the situation has just recently made a major step forward towards reopening for cruise ships. On July 15, the government announced that from that have a capacity of over 100. As long as cruise lines follow the health protocols, then they will be able to resume from that date.

Royal Caribbean Will Cruise From California For The First Time In A Decade
Royal Caribbean will base a cruise ship in California after a 10-year-long hiatus.
At a webinar on Wednesday, the line announced that recently refurbished Navigator of the Seas will homeport in Los Angeles, beginning next year, offering a series of Mexico sailings.
The voyages will vary in length, featuring three- and four-nighters with calls on Ensenada and Catalina Island five-night cruises visiting Cabo San Lucas and seven-night sailings with stops at Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas.
We are going back to the West Coast, said Vicki Freed, Royal Caribbeans senior vice president of sales and trade support & service. Los Angeles, here we come.
This will be the first time the line has based a ship in the Golden State since back in 2011 due to violence in Mexico and dwindling profits.
Earlier this month, Royal Caribbean Blog speculated that the move was coming after spotting the ship listed on the Port of Los Angeles website. Navigator of the Seas was also blatantly missing from Royal Caribbeans list of upcoming itinerary offerings.
Oddly, the ports website lists Navigator of the Seas sailings beginning as early as September 2021, but Royal Caribbean has said they will run from summer 2022 through spring of 2023.
Hooked first debuted on Symphony of the Seas, and Navigator of the Seas is now the only other ship in the fleet on which its located.

Of course, if you are driving, then you will need a spot to park. The port offers ample parking in a garage thats right next to the terminal. However, that convenience comes at a cost. The port charges $23 per day for parking. Over the course of a weeklong cruise, expect to spend upwards of $160.
For all the details on parking, see our Long Beach cruise parking page here.
There are also hotels in the area that offer cruise parking for guests. Stay a night and you can leave your car while you sail for a reduced cost versus parking at the port. If you plan on staying in a hotel the night before your cruise, this deal can save you a nice chunk of change.

Cruises Return But Still Months Until All Ships Are Back
The process of cruises returning is like nothing the industry has seen before. There is no precedent. That makes it more difficult to understand exactly how it will play out.
The process has been slow so far with the CDC, but it is starting to ramp up more quickly. Already, several major lines including Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, and Carnival have officially returned to sailing, with many more scheduled in the weeks and months ahead.
But the full return of ships will take many more months to play out — even if all goes well. Carnival has said that it plans to have 15 ships sailing by the end of October.
All of this, of course, is dependent that a rise in virus cases doesn’t impact the return and vaccines continue to work against the virus.
Keep in mind that this situation is truly unprecedented. There is simply no way to know exactly when cruises return until the ship leaves the dock with passengers.
Below are the latest return dates for U.S. sailings, based on currently scheduled cruises.

Will There Be Cruises In 2022
Along with more existing cruise ships sailing in 2022, there are a number of brand new cruise ships scheduled to set sail. Some of these amazing and innovative ships include Virgin Voyages Scarlet Lady and Valiant Lady, as well as Celebrity Apex, Royal Caribbeans Odyssey of the Seas, and Enchanted Princess.
Returning After A Decade
Royal Caribbeans announcement that it will cruise from Los Angeles regularly after more than a decade is significant, as industry insiders have speculated about its West Coast return for years.
While other cruise lines returned, Royal Caribbean stayed away, claiming it was able to make more money elsewhere.
In 2015, Freed pointed out the low rates competitor cruise lines were getting. We always look at the West Coast. But we continue to look at the rates that the other cruise lines are getting, and we offer an experience that we cant afford to be selling at those low rates.
If and when we see the rates start to bounce back, and we feel we can get paid for what we offer for our product, then well be back there. But right now, unfortunately, its a bath out there. Theyre selling four-day cruises at $199 per person, and were not just talking Carnival.
We spend more on food, more on entertainment and more on our overall onboard experience , and so we cannot be the low-price leader out in any market.
The line also cited the logistical challenges of returning its ships to the West Coast, much of which had to do with the rise of cruise popularity in other areas of the world, such as Europe and China. Sending ships to those locations meant fewer ships to go to other ports.
