The Cooking School Is Back And Better
Cooking schools at sea are suddenly all the rage. Even budget line Carnival recently added one. So, it perhaps should come as no surprise that Regent is doubling down on the concept.
After adding its first cooking classroom at sea in 2016 on Seven Seas Explorer, the line has built a second one on Seven Seas Splendor.
In size and layout, Seven Seas Splendors Culinary Arts Kitchen, as the venue is called, is nearly identical to the cooking classroom on Seven Seas Explorer. It has 18 individual cooking stations tricked out with top-of-the-line induction cooktops, stainless steel sinks and all sorts of cool cooking equipment. Its backed by floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the ocean.
But, during an abbreviated test class in the space over the weekend, it was clear the programming has been revamped in a major way.
More than a dozen new classes have been added with a focus on dishes from the destinations where Seven Seas Splendor will be sailing.
During the session I experienced, we started with a lesson on a fried, stuffed-olive appetizer from the Le Marche region of Italy where Seven Seas Splendor was built. We then tried our hand at poaching fish in a Spanish style that tied to the ships transatlantic crossing to Miami from Spain. Instruction in making a French Toast-like dessert themed to the ships new home in the Caribbean rounded out the experience.

Holiday Cruise To Antarctica In A Silver Cloud Expedition Silver Suite
What’s better than an Antarctica cruise? An Antarctica cruise during the holidays. A band rocks out, and you dance and hug newfound friends. Everyone rejoices in this once-in-a-lifetime celebration.
Unlike the typical 10-day Antarctic itinerary, the 15-day holiday voyage fully explores the region, including the wildlife-rich Falkland and historical South Shetland Islands. Mingle with penguins , gawk at breeching whales and snap photos of massive seals. Cruise in a Zodiac past towering icebergs or visit researchers at their base stations. Maybe you’ll even score bragging rights by taking the polar plunge after you jump into the freezing water, you can sip Champagne wrapped in a warm towel or in the hot tub, toasting your bravado.
Onboard, swoon over consummate luxury. Silver Cloud Expedition, hosting only 200 passengers in polar regions, offers all-suite accommodations and white-gloved butlers who pamper passengers with candlelit baths and complimentary caviar. A Silver Suite delivers an uber-comfy 541 square feet including a 92-square-foot veranda, dining area, spacious bar setup and two bathrooms. Best Luxury Cruise Ships
The moment you step aboard a luxury cruise ship, a hostess is at your arm proffering a glass of bubbly while a capable room steward offers to heft your carry-on as he escorts you to what will be your home-away-from-home for the next few days. You stow your things and then emerge from your suite to get the lay of the ship. As you walk the decks, friendly crew members greet you … by name. How can that be? You just set foot onboard!
First-class, personalized service is just one of the hallmarks of luxury cruise lines. You can also expect exotic itineraries, varying degrees of inclusivity in pricing, fine wines and gourmet cuisine as well as universally high crew-to-passenger ratios.
That being the case, you might think any old luxury cruise ship will do, but that’s not quite true. Like people, cruise ships have their own unique personalities — and some will be more suited to your vacation style than others. Lines like SeaDream might not offer the most spacious suites, but their intimate yachts can stealthily visit ports that large ships can’t manage. Regent Seven Seas and Oceania Cruises are owned by the same parent company but Regent offers a completely inclusive vacation experience, while Oceania draws travelers with a more independent streak.

Silver Muse Silversea Cruises
Passenger-to-Crew Ratio: 596 to 411
Food is one area where this cruise ship excels. Its approach to dining is unique to Silver Muse, which lacks a traditional main dining room and instead has eight smaller restaurants at which passengers can dine any night. Two of them — Kaiseki and La Dame by Relais & Chateaux — require a $60 per person per meal surcharge, but the other six are complimentary . Japanese-themed Kaiseki serves complimentary sushi at lunch, and becomes a swanky teppanyaki joint by night. Serving traditional French dishes with ingredients sourced from France, La Dame is an exclusive venue thanks to Silversea’s partnership with Relais & Chateaux. Kaiseki and La Dame are the smallest restaurants onboard.
Complimentary choices on Silver Muse include Asian-fusion Indochine, Italian La Terrazza, seafood grill Atlantide, tapas restaurant and bar Silver Note, pizza place Spaccanapoli, and Hot Rocks, a grill-your-own meat venue. During the day, La Terrazza is the ship’s buffet, offering breakfast and lunch. Likewise, Atlantide is the closest to a main dining room you’ll find, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner for those who prefer a sit-down option.
