What To Pack For Your Adventure With Custom Alaska Cruises

Ovation of the Seas Alaska Cruise! What to bring

The packing list above is a good guideline, some previous guests have commented that they had to bring to much luggage. Please remember you will need just enough indoor & outdoor clothes for 7 days on the boat. Days can be sunny, cold, hot, rainy and everything in between.

  • Passports & Personal Identification If you are traveling to Alaska from outside the US, you will need your passport for the flight to Alaska.
  • Make copies of your passport and credit card information in case it gets stolen
  • Layers are very important in Alaska. Pack multiple layers of shirts, sweaters and fleece rather than one heavy coat.
  • Long and short sleeved shirts
  • Sweat pants or other comfortable pants
  • Shorts
  • Bathing suit for a hot springs visit
  • Warm socks
  • Warm jacket
  • Lightweight gloves or mittens
  • Long underwear

What To Wear On Days At Sea

During days at sea, you will spend time enjoying the ships facilities. Be prepared for the outside decks and balconies to be windy and chilly, unless you get lucky with a burst of sunshine.

Attire on board is pretty casual during the day: jeans or leggings, hiking pants, or exercise clothes are all appropriate. On top you probably want to dress in layers with a long-sleeve t-shirt topped with a sweater, light fleece, or down vest. I would still bring one or two short-sleeve t-shirts and a pair of shorts just in case it is warm enough to enjoy the sun deck or your balcony.

Since you dont want to have to pack too many shoes, stick with either sneakers, flip flops, hiking boots, or flats which can be interchanged between the gym, spa/pool, outdoors, and dinner.

Whether you are sitting outside or in the observation lounge, you will probably want to have something cozy to snuggle up in. If you have room to pack a thin blanket, you will enjoy having that to curl up in while you are relaxing outside

Dont Leave Your Shorts At Home

On our first cruise to Alaska back in 2005, we arrived to a major heat wave in our embarkation port of Seattle. Were talking 90+ degrees Fahrenheit, and NONE of us had packed the proper clothing for summer weather that youd more typically find in Southern California. What did we do? Mom, myself, and my husband headed to the mall and we ALL bought a pair of shorts!

It was pretty hilarious, but since that little incident, weve NEVER left for an Alaska cruise without a single pair of shorts in our suitcase . You never know when youll have an 80+ degree day, even in the Last Frontier!

For outdoor excursions, we recommend packing a pair of wicking socks, which will keep your feet dry while youre busy hiking or running outside.

What To Pack For Alaska Cruise In August

Packing for a cruise can be confusing and tricky. Perhaps when you learned there would be formal nights onboard, you had nightmarish flashbacks to ill-fitting prom tuxes and figure skater-style sequin dresses.

Dont worrybeing ultra-casual wont be a hindrance on your cruise, and you can fit in with the formal dining nights with ease. While people certainly rock formal wear, my goal is to pack carryon only for the flights to and from the cruise terminals and to make sure my clothes are versatile as possible.

Creating an interchangeable capsule wardrobe is the key to simplified packing, which can easily fit into a carryon suitcase with the help of packing cubes to compress your clothing!

  • Dinner in Specialty Restaurant

My formal clothing was worn each evening as per the cruise dress code. I probably could have worn the same top for the semi-formal dinners, but it was more fun to have options. Each night after dinner, my husband and I would race back to the cabin to change into jeans and a sweater before checking out the evening activities.

I wore the same gown with a different scarf and earrings for our two formal nights. Although some people did not go all out, there were enough of us who did, making it very festive and totally glamorous definitely worth the effort.

Swimsuit For The Ship

Swimming in Alaska? Its not crazy. Cruise ships will have hot tubs that you can soak in while watching the beauty of the area float past. And many ships these days also have indoor pools or solariums where you can take a dip in relative warmth, no matter the weather outside. In other words, just because you are headed for a cold area, dont leave the swimsuit at home.

What Boots Are Best For Alaskan Cruise Excursions

Boots! No matter where you go in Alaska, you need a good pair of boots. I highly highly recommend Hunter Boots. They are SUPER comfortable and obviously waterproof.

Pair your Hunter Boots with some wool socks and they kept my feet warm and dry even on the coldest days. I loved having a pair of rain boots because they worked everywhere we went whether it be snow or rain or lakes or streams.

They also have a great tread on them and made hiking easy. My Hunter boots were hands down my best pick for an Alaskan Cruise!

When we visited the Mendenhall Glacier, everyone was standing on the solid ground and I was the only one walking around and splashing through the water because I had on my rain boots!

I was worried these wouldnt be comfortable enough to walk around all day in but after wearing them 2 days in a row my feet never hurt.

You will also need a good pair of winter boots. I love these boots by Sorel. They are warm, waterproof and easy to walk around in. These boots are definitely a must if its really snowy or you walk on a glacier.

If you choose to go hiking, youll need a good pair of hiking shoes. Something water-resistant is best as most of southern Alaska is a rainforest and very wet.

I loved these hiking shoes, they kept me dry and were great to hike in. I also purchased a pair of these pants for my hiking trips. They are flexible, lightweight, and perfect for outdoor adventures. Not to mention the camo ones are super cute!
