Environmental And Community Stewardship

Our port lies in a naturally beautiful harbour setting and we work hard to keep it that way with programs like shore power, an initiative that aims to decrease marine diesel air emissions by allowing cruise ships to shut down their engines when in port. The Canada Place cruise terminal is equipped with Shore Power on its east and west berths. Our Blue Circle Awards recognize ships that participate in our EcoAction program, which promotes emissions reduction goals for ocean-going vessels, including cruise ships. More information on these programs is available in environment.

Where To Stay In Vancouver

Its important to note, Vancouver is the most expensive city in Canada. Staying in the downtown core is much like vacationing in Miami Beach or New York City. If you are seeking a hotel close to the cruise terminal, the Hotel Fairmont Pacific Rim, Pan Pacific Hotel, and Hotel Fairmont Waterfront are within steps. However, these hotels come with the convenience of being within walking distance of the cruise terminal, but they come with a hefty price tag.

If you are mobility challenged or money is of no concern, the Pan Pacific Hotel is literally at the cruise ship terminal. Staying there allows you to sleep in on embarkation day, check out of your hotel and check in to your cruise ship without leaving the building. Can it be any more convenient?

Sutton Place Hotel, and the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre, are more economical options. However, they are a cab ride away.

However, if you are flying in the night before and need the most economical hotel, stay in Richmond near the airport and travel into downtown Vancouver the morning of embarkation day. The best options are the Holiday Inn ExpressVancouver Airport, Coast Vancouver Airport Hotel, or the Pacific Gateway Hotel near the airport.

Us Bill Pushes To Permanently Allow Alaska Cruise Ships To Skip Bc Destinations

If a US senator from Utah were to have his way, the current temporary policy that allows Alaska cruise ships to skip destinations in British Columbia would become permanent.

Republican senator Mike Lees three bills introduced earlier this week would repeal and reform the Passenger Vessel Services Act of 1886, a law he calls outdated, protectionist law that harms American jobs and American tourism.

The law mandates passenger ships between US ports to call at a foreign port between the stops at US ports. But Lee argues these cruise ships could otherwise spend more time in American ports, benefiting the businesses in those cities and their port workers.

Cruises sailing from Seattle to Alaska must stop at a BC port, while cruises from California to Hawaii often stop in Ensenada in Mexico.

This arcane law benefits Canada, Mexico, and other countries who receive increased maritime traffic, at the expense of American workers in our coastal cities, towns, and ports, said Lee.

Reducing demand for jobs and travel opportunities here in the US is the opposite of America First. And in the context of ocean liners, this protectionist law is literally protecting no one, as there hasnt been a cruise ship built domestically in over half a century. The PVSA is bad economics and bad law, and its far past time that Congress reconsider it.

Canada To Welcome Cruise Ships Back Starting In November

The federal government has given the green light for cruise lines to return to Canadian waters starting in November.

Previously, the federal government said that cruise ships would be banned until at least February 2022.

Now, cruises will be able to dock in Canada if they can meet all federal health requirements starting Nov. 1, 2021, according to federal Transport Minister Omar Alghabra.

“As Canadians have done their part to reduce the spread of COVID-19, our government continues to work hard to safely restart our economy and build back better,” said said Alghabra, in a release Thursday.

“We will welcome cruise ships an important part of our tourism sector back in Canadian waters for the 2022 season.”

Alghabra acknowledged that the federal government previously said that cruise ships would not be allowed back into the country until 2022 while speaking at a news conference Thursday.

However, he said that Canadians’ “extraordinary work” during the pandemic, including high vaccination rates, means that the federal government is comfortable with accelerating its timeline.

Alghabra noted that by reopening ports in 2021, cruise lines can prepare for a full 2022 season in Canada. He added that the Nov. 1 start date also aligns with U.S. cruise plans.

While the federal government is lifting some restrictions in the fall, Alghabra says Canada is still currently advising that Canadians do not travel on cruise ships outside of the country.
