Viking Sky Cruise Ship Propulsion Details
Viking Sky is equipped with four MAN 32 / 44CR engines powering Rolls-Royce Promas propulsion and manoeuvring system. The Promas system incorporates the propeller and the rudder in a single unit to increase the hydrodynamic efficiency. The propulsion unit includes six-bladed 4.5m-diameter fixed-pitch mono-block propellers.
Rudders and propellers were designed and developed by the Rolls-Royce Hydrodynamic Research Centre in Sweden. The model testing of the Promas system was performed by MARIN.

On July 10, I boarded one of the earliest Nordic sailings open to vaccinated Americans. A new itinerary from Viking Cruises, it’s an eight-day circumnavigation of the island nation, running clockwise from Reykjavík. Short on time, most visitors to Iceland head straight for the Blue Lagoon or heavily touristed Golden Circle. This voyage, by contrast, ports in lesser-trafficked idylls like the spectacular Westfjords and small fishing villages dotting the the east coast. My options for shore excursions included glacier treks and ATV rides through surreal volcanic landscapes. It had all the makings of a memorable tripjust not for the reasons I expected.
I was nervous about cruising after 16 months of a largely self-imposed lockdown, but eager to dip my toe back into international waters. I was also impressed by the health and safety measures Viking had instituted since pausing its operations more than a year earlier. In addition to requiring all guests and crew be fully vaccinated before setting foot on board the 930-passenger Viking Sky, the cruise line implemented a robust contact tracing system, daily PCR testing in a dedicated en-ship laboratory, new ventilation technology and a UVC disinfection robot, plus mask mandates and other social distancing protocols . Without those precautions in place, I wouldnt have even considered traveling on a cruise ship during a global pandemic.

Viking European River Cruises For Chinese Travelers
In Fall 2016, Viking became the first European river cruise company offering itineraries on dedicated to Chinese tourists riverboats. The company dedicated two longships, on which the primary onboard language is Mandarin.
The first longship’s 2016 itineraries are on Rhine River, between homeports Amsterdam and Basel. The second longship’s 2017 itineraries are on Danube. On both riverboats, all the hotel staff is Mandarin-speaking, all the signage is in Mandarin . The onboard cuisine is traditional Chinese plus European dishes by Michelin-star chefs.

Viking Cruises Coronavirus Update
Viking Cruises suspended passenger shipping operations fleetwide by canceling all voyages with pre-scheduled departures in the period March 12, 2020, through July 2021. Fleetwide operations were planned to resume on October 1, 2020. However, due to ongoing travel restrictions in Europe and the USA, as well as Canada’s and Australia’s ban on cruise shipping, Viking canceled the entire 2020 program in mid-August.
- VIKING OCEAN restarted operations on May 22, 2021, with Viking Venus .
- VIKING RIVER restarted in July 2021 , VIKING’s Egypt boats – in August.
- In March-April 2021, Viking OCEAN announced that plans to restart operations with Viking Venus , Viking Orion and Viking Sky . All these voyages were open for booking to UK residents only. In May were added July-October departures for the ships Viking Sea and Viking Venus.
All affected bookings received a 125% refund in FCC with rebooking or 100% monetary refund. Fully refunded were also all prepurchased through Viking packages and services. The FCC is valid for 24 months , for any Viking cruise itinerary and fully transferable.
All bookings made by April 30, 2020, received Risk-Free Guarantee that allows penalty-free cruise cancellation up to 24 hours prior departure. The cancellations and rebooking promos affected both Viking Cruises-owned subsidiary companies and travel brands – “Viking Ocean Cruises” and “Viking River Cruises”.

Viking Ocean Cruises Review: Onboard An Adults
The cruise that is the subject of this review, along with all meals, lodging, etc., were provided at no cost to the writer.
Since 1997, Viking River Cruises has been making a name for itself by cruising through the worlds rivers on a fleet of elegantly appointed vessels small enough to navigate them. The fleet is currently up to 53 longships, and the company has been able to establish a loyal following by branding itself as The Thinking Persons Cruise, complete with curated onboard libraries, guest lecturers, a focus on the culture of the destinations, unique itineraries and excursions and an emphasis on serving regional cuisine.
River cruises come with certain limitations, though, like the size of the ships and an inability to traverse more open expanses of water. So in 2013, the company announced the launch of Viking Ocean Cruises, a fleet of nearly-identical cruise ships that while larger than the longships, are still much smaller than what youd expect from, say, Royal Caribbean. When offered the opportunity to travel aboard the Viking Sky on its Viking Homelands itinerary to Northern Europe, we accepted, eager to see how Viking Ocean Cruises ships stacked up against the competition.
