Cruise Ship Pearl Mist To Embark On Maiden Voyage

Nearly eight years after it was ordered, the cruise ship Pearl Mist will embark finally on its maiden voyage Wednesday from Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, ending the vessel’s protracted saga.

The 335-foot cruise ship, which spent the past year being finished at a Salisbury shipyard, will depart for an 11-night “Maritime New England Cruise” that will take the 210-passenger vessel north to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where it was built.

A lengthy legal dispute between the ship’s buyer and its builder delayed its cruise schedule for years.

Charles Robertson, who owns Chesapeake Shipbuilding Inc. in Salisbury, established the Pearl Seas Cruises line in 2006, eyeing a growing market for smaller, more intimate ships calling on international ports. With his own shipyard running at full capacity at the time, Robertson hired Irving Shipbuilding Inc. of Halifax to build the Pearl Mist, the line’s first ship, for $43.5 million.

Disputes between Pearl Seas and Irving over the construction of the vessel began just months later. Pearl Seas eventually would accuse Irving of not building the ship to specifications, question whether the ship met safety and environmental standards, and say it had failed multiple sea trials, according to court filings.

Over the years, the two companies fought over the ship contract before a board of maritime arbitrators and in court. The legal wrangling only ended last year, when both parties asked a federal appeals court in New York to close the last remaining case.

After Years Of Dispute Cruise Ship Pearl Mist Gets Closer To Launch

After a four-year buffeting in the legal system, the Pearl Mist has finally found haven in Maryland.

The owner of the 335-foot cruise ship and the Canadian shipyard that built it have parted ways in a nasty divorce that involved two federal courts and an arbitration panel that itself was reduced to internal squabbling.

And after sitting at a Canton pier for a month, the Pearl Mist was moved last Sunday to Chesapeake Shipbuilding Inc. in Salisbury to be readied for her maiden cruise from Baltimore next June.

Gleaming white on the outside, Pearl Mist is a caldron of unfinished business on the inside, from a spartan wheelhouse in need of electronics to staterooms barren of furniture.

“She’s been a mystery ship,” said Carolyn Spencer Brown, editor of CruiseCritic.com. “She was supposed to come out in 2008 and we’re all still waiting.”

The ship is the vision of Charles Robertson, the soft-spoken owner of Pearl Seas Cruises LLC, the Connecticut-based American Cruise Lines and the Salisbury shipyard. He formed the Pearl Seas line to combine international travel with the intimate experience of cruising on a 210-passenger ship.

“We have enjoyed considerable success with American Cruise Lines, and we also know from our passengers that they are interested in going to the Canadian Maritimes and Belize and the Caribbean on a smaller ship,” Robertson said. “We were responding to demand.”

The Pearl Mist would be its first passenger cruise ship.

Experts said the case was unusual.

Is It Worth Getting A Balcony On A Cruise

Shipfax: Pearl Mist

The extra price for a balcony is worth it if youll put it to good use. Your ship design places balcony rooms on higher decks. This means rooms with balconies have better views, especially on river cruises where lower rooms are close to the water line. If you want the extra space offered by a balcony room.

Port Milwaukee Strikes Lease Agreement With Pearl Seas Cruises

Port, operators remain optimistic about 2021 cruise ship season

The thought of vacationing by cruise ship any time soon seems far-fetched as the COVID-19 pandemic looms, but Port Milwaukee has its sights set on better days for the local cruise market.

Port Milwaukee is working to finalize a 10-year lease agreement with Guilford, Connecticut-based Pearl Seas Cruises to provide priority docking rights for the lines 210-passenger Pearl Mist at Pier Wisconsin, located on the downtown lakefront just east of Discovery World.

The Board of Harbor Commissioners approved the lease agreement Thursday morning. It still needs final approval from the Milwaukee Common Council and Mayor Tom Barrett.

The agreement, which would begin Jan. 1, 2021, builds on Pearl Seas previous selection of Milwaukee as a turnaround port for its 8- and 12-day cruises between Milwaukee and Toronto. That move significantly helped boost passenger cruise visits at the port from 2018 to 2019.

The Port continues to capitalize on increased interest in passenger cruising on the Great Lakes and increased interest in Milwaukee as the hub for passengers to start or end their voyages, said Port Director Adam Tindall-Schlicht. In the coming years, thousands of passengers will visit our city, stay in local hotels, dine in our restaurants, and enjoy all the great things Milwaukee offers.

As of now, the port anticipates 15 vessel visits next year, bringing approximately 4,700 passengers.

Small Ship Cruising With Modern Amenities

Pearl Seas Cruises plans to incorporate a small ship experience with modern amenities as well as using Luxury Adventure. An interesting combination? Yes, but it makes even more sense because Charles Robertson whos President & CEO and Chairman of the Board of the highly acclaimed, successful American Cruise Lines, is also President & CEO of Pearl Seas Cruises. Its taking that success in a new direction with Pearl Seas Cruises, an offshore affiliate of American Cruise Lines, Inc.

Pearl Seas Postpones Cuba Itineraries

Pearl Seas Cruises cancelled March sailings to Cuba from Miami because it still needs an OK from the islands government.

The line expects to operate the 10-night April 5 cruise, said Tim Beebe, vice president of the Guilford, Conn.-based company. They also have trips planned on the 210-passenger Pearl Mist April 15 and 25, according to their online schedule, then theyll do northern itineraries in the summer and resume Cuba sailings in late October.

Pearl Seas Cruises received notice on March 10 that the meeting with the Cuban government, where we expected to receive final approval, had been postponed until after President Obamas visit, Beebe said via e-mail. Therefore we had to cancel the March 16, 2016 Cuba Cultural Voyage cruise.

Passengers were either transferred to other sailings or cancelled trips and were given refunds, he said.

Pearl Seas president Charles Robertson, who also owns U.S.-flagged American Cruise Lines, earlier told WorkBoat that the spring Cuba cruises were nearly sold out. Beebe noted that fall Cuba ticket sales are strong.

Obama, who has made dramatic changes in U.S.-Cuba relations, is scheduled to arrive in Cuba March 20.

Where Is The Best Room On A Cruise Ship

The lower and more central you are in a ship , the less roll and sway you will feel. Even if you choose a balconied stateroom , choose the lowest level and the most midship one you can find. The higher decks and cabins at the very front or back of the ship will rock and roll the most.

Who Owns My Cruise Line A Guide To Cruise Line Parent Companies

Pearl Seas Cruises presents the Pearl Mist for Travel Agents, Crucero.

If you’re confused about which companies own which cruise lines, you’re not alone. There are so many brands these days, it can be difficult to keep track of which ones are part of the same family. You might even be surprised to discover that budget-friendly lines and super-pricey luxury lines share the same parent companies.

When it comes to ownership, most cruise lines — with the notable exceptions of MSC Cruises, which is privately owned by the family of Italian billionaire Gianluigi Aponte Viking Cruises, which is privately held and overseen by founder Torstein Hagen and Windstar Cruises, owned by Xanterra Parks and Resorts, a division of the Anschutz Company — are publicly traded, which means they are owned by their parent companies’ shareholders. Below, we break down which cruise line parent companies own which cruise line brands, as well as where those parent companies are domiciled. We also list the stock symbols and presidents or CEOs for each.
