This westward trip across Canada was actually the beginning stages of our journey entirely around the world without flights.
At the time, it was all just a rough sketch of varying ideas and possibilities. But this cheap world cruise would ultimately take us to:

How Cheap Is A World Cruise
The idea of a world cruise seems like something achievable only to the wealthy and retired. Were neither. Not even close.
Yet we love to travel and the idea of taking a cruise around the world is appealing. We regularly come across social media shareslike this onethat just popped up on my Facebook feed last week. It swoons over a 117-day Regent world cruise with an exotic itinerary that looks just as amazing as the elegant ship itself. Yet that world cruise has a pretty amazing price tag to match. If you can catch the special fare, currently the cheapest cabin for this world cruise is $124,998 for a couple. Ouch.
When looking at the expenses of long-term travel, its often easier to conceptualize daily or monthly costs. This cruise breaks down to $534 per person, per day. Thats $32,000 for a couple, each month.
Any way you slice it yikes! And oddly enough, the Miami-to-Barcelona route of this world cruise doesnt even make it entirely around the world. But I digress. The point is: this world cruise is a mega-expensive trip, only for the wealthy!
Surely there must be cheaper world cruises. And there is.
Without flights, this cruise ultimately breaks down to $179 per person, per day, for the nearly 4-month voyage. We think this is actually an excellent deal for a fully around the world cruise! Yet what amounts to $10,000 for a couple, for each month of travel is still entirely too much for our frugal travel tendencies.
Or is it?
How Much It Costs
Seeing that much of the world is going to cost you. Prices for Regents around-the-world cruise begin at $87,000 per person for a Deluxe Veranda Suite. Prices go up from there to a whopping $250,000 per person for a Master Suite, which boasts two bedrooms, two-and-a-half baths, two balconies, and a private butler.
But, those prices include a lot! They include first-class flights, a gala in Miami before the cruise, luggage service, and valet laundry on board the ship, plus three onshore experiences highlighting local culture and cuisine in Argentina, New Zealand, and Thailand. Additionally, all meals and drinks are also included.
Reservations for the around-the-world cruise will open on June 15, 2022, but Regent is currently taking requests for registration. Keep in mind that Regents 2024 world cruise sold out in 3 hours, so if youre interested, be sure to act quickly once registration opens!

But we have some estimates below to give you an idea of the cost of taking a cruise.
Cruise Fare Obviously its impossible to give you a specific cost of your cruise fare. There are so many different factors that go into what youll pay, including:
- Cruise line
- Cabin type
- Trip length
That means the price you pay will see a wide range. Sailings can be less than $100 per person, per day, into several hundreds of dollars each day.
That said, we can get a good idea of what youll spend. All the major cruise lines are public companies that publish annual figures for their revenue and passenger statistics.
From these public reports, we know that the average cost of cruise fare runs from about $150-220 per person, per day .
For example, in 2019 , Carnival Corporation which owns several different lines including Carnival, Princess, Cunard, and others took in $14.1 billion in ticket revenue, and sailed 93.4 million passenger days. That comes out to $151 per person, per day.
Royal Caribbean Group was slightly higher , and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. came in at the top of our list .

The Value Of A World Cruise
Some world cruises take you to a dozen countries, which is impressive if youre trying to rack up passport stamps. What would it cost if you independently visited six of these countries, including booking airfare to all of those destinations? Say you live in or near Los Angeles and you plan to visit the countries on the Princess Cruises itinerary mentioned above. This means buying plane tickets to two U.S. states and 24 countries. As airfare costs fluctuate greatly, lets say each ticket to a destination is $500 one-way. Youve just spent $13,000 on airfare. This makes the $18,449 world-cruise fare suddenly more affordable, right? And this is before factoring in lodging or food.

The cheapest ticket on Royal Caribbeans World Cruise costs $58,666 per person. This includes taxes, fees and port charges and is based on two people sharing the cheapest Interior Stateroom and paying the balance 11 months in advance.
This works out at $214 per night. If you want a balcony , then the cheapest ticket costs $79,321, equivalent to $289 per night.
According to my analysis of average cruise costs, a typical 7-night Royal Caribbean cruise to the Caribbean in a Balcony Stateroom with gratuities and drinks included costs $1,735. This equates to $248 per night.
So, the Ultimate World Cruise is pretty expensive. Per night, its 17% more expensive than the average Royal Caribbean cruise, despite being on one of the older, smaller ship. Wouldnt you have thought that the per-night rate would be lower given the long duration of the cruise?
You can get a 7-night Alaska cruise on sister ship, Radiance of the Seas, for just $328, which shows how inexpensive cruises on the older Radiance-class ships like Serenade of the Seas can be.
