Columbus’s first landfall in what was to Europeans a “New World” was on an island he named San Salvador . Whilst there is a general consensus that this island lay within the Bahamas, precisely which island Columbus landed on is a matter of scholarly debate. Some researchers believe the site to be present-day , situated in the southeastern Bahamas, whilst an alternative theory holds that Columbus landed to the southeast on , according to calculations made in 1986 by writer and editor , based on Columbus’s log. On the landfall island, Columbus made first contact with the Lucayans and exchanged goods with them, claiming the islands for the , before proceeding to explore the larger isles of the .
The 1494 theoretically divided the new territories between the and the , placing the Bahamas in the Spanish sphere however they did little to press their claim on the ground. The Spanish did however exploit the native Lucayan peoples, many of whom were enslaved and sent to Hispaniola for use as forced labour. The slaves suffered harsh conditions and most died from contracting to which they had no half of the Taino died from alone. As a result of these depredations the population of the Bahamas was severely diminished.

There are 17 different restaurants on Odyssey of the Seas, along with multiple bars and lounges. Royal Caribbean was certain to include many options so guests had plenty of choice and no single venue became too overcrowded.

The complimentary dining venues are included with your cruise fare, and you will be able to find plenty of food at no additional cost for every meal and snacks inbetween. In fact, the complimentary dining is quite good, and should not be overlooked because the food included with your cruise fare is cooked fresh every day and covers a great deal of tastes.
Specialty dining has an additional cost to it, and allows guests to opt into dining at these venues if they prefer. Most venues have a cover charge, where each guest pays a flat fee and all the food is included. A couple of venues have an a la carte menu, where you pay for each item individually.
The reason to go to a specialty restaurant is for a cooking style or cuisine not otherwise available on the ship. Specialty dining is a splurge, and is akin to choosing to go to a restaurant at home instead of having something in your house: there’s nothing wrong with the food you have at home, but sometimes it is nice to pay for a meal out.
Specialty dining is not cheap, but there are dining packages you can purchase before the cruise to get a discount on multiple restaurants.
Health & Safety On Odyssey Of The Seas
Passengers 12 and older sailing on Odyssey of the Seas must be fully vaccinated, with the final dose administered at least 14 days before sailing. All guests 2 and older — regardless of vaccination status — must take a COVID-19 test no more than two days before arriving at the departure port. Odyssey of the Seas is sailing at reduced capacity to encourage physical distancing onboard.

The Royal Caribbean Odyssey of the Seas is a fairly new ship, being built in 2021. It’s considered a large size ship. Coming in at 1,138 ft long and 135 ft wide, it’s roughly the length of 3.2 football fields, as wide as 2.5 tractor trailers, and the same height as a 14-story building.
The Odyssey of the Seas can hold 4,180 based on double occupancy and more when you take into account 3rd and 4th passengers. When you compare the total tonnage of the ship to the number of passengers, the Odyssey of the Seas has a space ratio of 40. Depending on the ship, this number can range from 30 to 52 so this ship’s space-to-person ratio is about average.

The Odyssey of the Seas is one of two Quantum-Ultra-class ships currently sailing with Royal Caribbean. Quantum-Ultra class ships are a slightly larger version of the Quantum-class ships. They still feature several notable features like the North Star viewing platform, the Seaplex with bumper cars, and iFly skydiving on board. They’re also known for their beautiful fully-enclosed glass solariums at the front of the ship. What Is A Quantum Ultra Class Ship
When you read about Odyssey of the Seas, you may hear she is a Quantum Ultra class ship and wonder what makes that different from Quantum Class ships.
In practice, the difference between a Quantum and Quantum Ultra Class ship is less noticeable than the difference between other classes of ships. Think of it more like a sub class of the Quantum Class, rather than a completely different categorization of Royal Caribbean vessel.
Odyssey has the same basic layout and signature activities of a Quantum Class ship, such as the North Star, SeaPlex, Ripcord by iFly, a Royal Esplanade and more.
The real difference is when you look at the layout and additions Royal Caribbean has made compared to her older siblings. Odyssey has been reworked a bit, with a unified main dining room, a SeaPlex that features Playmakers sports bar, and a new resort-style pool deck.
Some other changes you will find on a Quantum Ultra class ship include a SkyPad, the indoor pool is now outdoor, a Teppanyaki restaurant, and a slightly larger size.
Does Odyssey Of The Seas Have An Escape Room
While there is not a dedicated escape room on Odyssey of the Seas, they still offer an escape room game you can play.
Known as “A Royal Mystery” puzzle challenge, it is a game developed by the same company that creates the escape rooms for Royal Caribbean on other ships.
Held in Two70, this is a complimentary escape room game where teams try to solve a series of puzzles based on clues hidden throughout the room to help solve a whodunit murder case.
Guests participating have a set amount of time to comb over the details provided, as well as clues and puzzles they will discover until they can solve the case.

Cruising On Royal Caribbeans Odyssey Of The Seas
While this was not an inaugural event but the naming of the Odyssey it was certainly an event with excitement and energy. In my personal opinion this is the nicest most elegant Royal Caribbean ship they have come out with. The décor is truly stunning and the art work is classy instead of whimsical.
Honestly it really rough to do a review of a ship of this size with only a day to check it all out and give a full meaningful report. As with all of Royals new builds there is a heck of lot going on these ships from entertainment, dining options, and all sorts of activities.
One thing that Royal is increasing getting well known for is the high energy you experience onboard. Forget bring a book or two to read, not going to happen! I had a stern cabin which is bigger than the normal balcony but still with the same décor as the standard balcony cabin. While lacking in some common stateroom amenities the generous space is quite comfortable for 7 night cruise. Bedding was much more comfortable than some cruises I have recently been on.
With just 2 dinners, 1 lunch and 1 breakfast there is not an opportunity sample everything, actually hardly anything when you see the number of options available. There are 10 outlets available for dining. There is of course a buffet option called the Market Place that is no longer self-serve, yeah! There are 6 other locations for coffee and snacks plus room service. Yes there is a Starbucks. You are going to go hungry on this ship!

Despite the Odyssey of the Seas size, which is large, great care has been taken to ensure passenger flow doesn’t feel congested. With so many spots to enjoy onboard including a huge pool deck guests tend to find their favorites and stick with them. And multiple shows in the main entertainment venues are offered on various nights, so it’s easy to work out a schedule that suits you without running up against crowds.
