Virgin Voyages Seriously Suites

Virgin Voyages is new to the cruise industry, but it knows whats up. Positioning itself as a hip anti-cruise line, it has built its first vessel, Scarlet Lady, to include 46 cabins for single passengers, 40 of which are insides and six of which provide rare forward-facing views of the sea.

Theyre a bit small at just larger than 100 square feet, but these Seriously Suites are cleverly named and even more cleverly appointed with full-sized beds and sleek, stylish furniture, decor and bathrooms.

Cruise Ship Studio Cabins Are Best For

Solo travelers who are 1) on a tight budget, and 2) dont need a lot of space. Many new sailors dont realize that cruise ship cabins arent priced like hotels: Cruise fares are per person, not per room. Families and larger groups wont pay as much for the third or fourth person in a double-occupancy cabin, but the first two guests will be paying full price. Solo cruisers essentially pay for both passengers in a standard cabin. Technically, more than one person can book a studio, but since fares are per person its actually cheaper to book a standard stateroom.

Tip: Strangely enough, studio cabins are not always the cheapest option for solo travelers, so its worth comparing the price of a studio cabin to against a standard stateroom with the single supplement.

Money Saving Tip: Pretend You Are Not Solo

One of my best tips is to price out a cruise booking as a solo cruiser, as well as making up a second person in the room to see which option is cheaper.

Royal Caribbean’s system sometimes penalizes solo cruisers so much with the single supplement fee, that it is not uncommon to find a lower price by paying for a phantom second guest who never actually shows up.

Essentially, you place your name and the name of someone else on the reservation. This could be a family member or friend who has absolutely no intention of sailing. It does not really matter, since this person will not be sailing, and there is no penalty or issue if a guest does not show up for the cruise.

While you will be paying for a second person that is not going on the cruise, in many cases this is still cheaper than a booking that only has one guest on the reservation.

It should be noted that when you show up for the cruise without that second person, you will be refunded port fees and taxes for the second person, as well as still receive double Crown and Anchor points for cruising solo.

The best part about this tip? You get an even bigger stateroom than if you booked a studio cabin!

The Best River Cruise Lines For Solo Travelers

March 4, 2021 By Britton Frost

Doing my first river cruise alone was one of the most fulfilling travel experiences of my life. There is something about traveling solo that makes me feel fiercely independent and unstoppable. The only downside to traveling solo, however, is the cost. Well sometimes.

Solo passengers often have to pay single supplements, meaning that they usually must dole out what a couple would pay for the same stateroom. Though single supplements can run high, some companies waive these fees. Some river cruise operators also have solo cabins, or, in Rivieras case, a waived solo supplement for a certain amount of travelers on every departure. But more on that in a minute.

Who Are Solo Cruisers

Which Ships Have Solo Cabins

You might be asking why on earth someone would want to go on a cruise by themselves or perhaps the term “solo cruisers” conjures up images of young singles on the prowl. There are, in fact, many reasons why a passenger might be sailing alone or solo in a cabin. Sometimes passengers who never imagined that they’d ever sail alone have unwittingly joined the ranks of solo cruisers. A solo cruiser may be:

  • A single, divorced or widowed person
  • Someone who has vacation time but their family or friends dont
  • A person who likes to cruise but their family or friends dont
  • Someone who prefers privacy over sharing a tiny cruise cabin or who simply enjoys traveling alone
  • A solo extended family member such as an aunt, uncle or in-law whos part of a larger group such as a family reunion
  • A person whos part of a large group of friends or co-workers, but doesnt have a roommate

A few cruise lines feature a limited number of cabins designated for single occupancy sparing the solo cruiser from having to pay double. While cruise lines advertise these single cabins as having no supplement, the single rate is usually slightly higher than the per-person rate of comparable double occupancy cabins. For instance, where a double occupancy room might cost $599 per-person for a total of $1198, a single occupancy cabin costs $799 total.

Rolling On A River Cruise

If cruising the blue Danube, pausing in Prague on the Elbe or capturing images of castles on the Rhine are more your calling than ocean voyages, consider a solo journey that takes you to the heart of the cities on Europe’s glorious rivers. Single supplements are waived on a good number of departures, with socializing facilitated by leading cruise operators such as Grand Circle Cruise Line, Uniworld, Tauck, AmaWaterways and Avalon Waterways. Whether you’re looking for a foursome for an after-dinner bridge game or a partner for exploring Venice’s Rialto Bridge, camaraderie on river cruises is sharply in focus these days. After all, as Tauck points out, your trip director is not only in the know about the itinerary’s destinations, but is a professional solo traveler, too. Check carefully on whether the offer is for a single supplement waiver, a cabin purpose-built for one or a roommate matching service.

How Big Are Studio Cabins On Cruise Ships

Much like regular staterooms, the size of studio cabins varies widely. With that said, the studios on most lines can make a New York City micro apartment look spacious. Sizes can be as small as 100 square feet for comparison, oceanview and balcony cabins on mainstream cruise lines are typically at least 150 to 200 square feet.

Solos hoping to avoid the dreaded single supplement should know that select cruise ships have cabins designed and priced specifically as single-occupancy rooms. With this in mind, its best for solo travelers to book extremely early.

Cruise Line Justification For The Single Supplement

Cruise cabins are sold at loss-leader rates to get customers onto the ships andhopefullyspend even more money on things like alcoholic beverages, spa treatments, shore excursions and gambling. Even with imposing a supplement on the solo passenger, an empty cabin bed equals lost revenue in the eyes of cruise lines. Had they been able to charge a second guest for the privilege of sleeping in that bed, that guest would likely have done so after a long day of buying drinks, spa treatments, shopping or gambling.

Book Shore Excursions Through The Cruise Line

8 Trends in Cruise Ship Cabin Design

Anchorage, Alaska

Shore excursions highlight the best parts of a destination and provide unforgettable experiences. Bond with fellow passengers by exploring the port together. Youll have the chance to run into them again on the ship for more fun and conversation.

When you book a shore excursion, you know youll be spending your day surrounded by other travelers on your ship. Most ports have multiple ships calling at them each day, so its better to spend the day making new friends with people who will board your ship at the end of the day.

Alaska

Choose an excursion that features a hands-on activity. This gets people out of their element and provides easy conversation starters. Chatting with others while hiking through a rainforest or waiting on a zip-lining platform can lead to fun conversations.

If you go on a sightseeing shore excursion on a bus, try to sit up near the front so youre close to the guide. Theyll usually be open to conversations and are a wealth of knowledge on the destination youre visiting.

You can ask questions and also learn about what its like to live there. Its a way to have some socialization throughout your solo cruise day in port while also learning more about the city or town youre visiting.

Galapagos

The best part? All the details are taken care of for you. Youll be conveniently guided right to your shore excursion transportation from the ship. Youre guaranteed to be back to the ship in time before it leaves for the next port.
