Yarmouth Nova Scotia To Portland Maine Ferry

February 20, 2022

One way to get from Nova Scotia to New England is to travel from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia to Portland, Maine via the , a lo-o-o-ng sea journey. While many people use the ferry to transport their cars, as well as themselves, we left one rental car in Yarmouth and picked up another in Portland.

Although the 2014 reinstatement of the ferry service provided the final push we needed to take our long-planned, but continually delayed our Nova Scotia trip, we didnt know what to expect.

One thing we did expect was a crowded ship that would make finding seats in the public areas hard to secure and picking up luggage at the end of the trip a long, time-consuming process. So even though the cruise to Portland is during the day , we decided to get a stateroom to have our own private space and a place to store our own luggage.

Our first surprise was that the ship was probably less than one-quarter filled. The lounges had plenty of room, including in the highly desired Piano Bar, with its wall-to-wall bow windows, comfortable seats, bar, and coffee shop. The reserved seating area was totally empty and there were plenty of inside and outside areas to walk, explore and to take in the views .

We were, however, again pleasantly surprised. Although it was still a buffet, it offered many different options, including:

Overall, it was a pleasant experience, although we would have preferred if our schedule had permitted an overnight cruise, rather than taking up a full day.

Prince Of Fundy Cruises

The service was sold by Lion Ferry in 1982 to Baron Stig Leuhusen who established Prince of Fundy Cruises as a subsidiary of Panamanian-based Transworld Steamship Company. The vessel M/S Scotia Prince was acquired and began service that season. In 1983, the other Yarmouth ferry operator, CN Marine, began using a sistership M/V Bluenose II on its Bar Harbor crossing. Prince of Fundy Cruises had the Scotia Prince lengthened in 1987 for increased capacity, changing the visual similarities between both ships. Leuhusen died in 1996 and his estate listed the company for sale in 1999.

In August 2000 the company’s shares were purchased by a group led by Matthew Hudson of Virginia. The company was renamed Scotia Prince Cruises. The Scotia Prince was re-flagged . The company upgraded the ship and onboard services in addition to other improvements made at the company. The service was repositioned from a transport provider to a transport and package vacation company. The service was marketed as a cruiseferry and destination in its own right.

During the winter of 2002-2003, Scotia Prince Cruises Ltd. inaugurated a service called the “Yucatan Express”, using the M/S Scotia Prince on a route between Tampa, Florida, in the United States and Cancun, Quintana Roo, and Merida, Yucatán, in Mexico.

Prince Of Fundy Cruise

Has anyone every taken the prince of fundy cruise from Portland Maine to yarmouth,? Just wondering if it be more fun to take this than CAT ferry?

Willow,RI

I hope someone will correct me if I’m wrong but Scotia Prince ceased operations between Portland and Yarmouth a few years ago.

Mold and toxicity present at the Portland Terminal was not resolved and the ferry pulled out a few years ago when dispute of this could not be worked out between the two.

I used to love the crossings on the Prince of Fundy, all 11 hours of it.

The ship moved at 19 knots and all immenities were very good imo.

I do believe the Cat is your only option now.
