First Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship To Sail To Alaska In Two Years Departs Today

Another milestone in the cruise industrys recovery has been reached today, with the official restart of cruises to Alaska.

Royal Caribbeans Serenade of the Seas is scheduled to depart Seattle on July 19.

After more than a year with cruising on pause, Serenade will sail from Pier 91 in Seattle a change from its previously scheduled homeport in Vancouver.

The significance of this first sailing is as large for the cruise industry as it is for the people of Alaska.

Just like cruises to the Caribbean, cruises to Alaska have been shutdown since 2020.

Without cruise tourists to Alaska since late 2019, the economic impact has been massive.

Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy has incurred a $3.3 billion loss in tourist dollars over that timeframe.

For Royal Caribbean, this is another ship back in service and another ship that has received approval from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Preventions to sail again.

Each of Royal Caribbeans cruise ships must perform a test cruise, where various health protocols and social distancing rules are tested out to demonstrate the ship can be operated safely.

Serenade of the Seas conducted her 4-night test cruise back on July 7 with 300 fully vaccinated passengers onboard.

The week-long itinerary features a lineup of ports of call, including Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan and Icy Strait Point, Alaska, as well as Endicott Arm fjord and Dawes Glacier.

After August 1, that requirement drops to 12 years old.

Where To Stay Before Or After A Seattle Cruise

If youre coming into the SeaTac airport late and not expecting to do much sightseeing around Seattle, staying near the airport is a good option, as it will be less expensive than staying downtown. The best hotel near SeaTac airport is Cedarbrook Lodge they have an incredible spa and award-winning farm-to-table restaurant. Other good options are the SeaTac Crowne Plaza and Hilton both offer cruise packages with complimentary shuttle service to the cruise terminals.

Staying in downtown Seattle will give you the best opportunity to see the city, and offers easy access to Seattles best attractions. Hotel rates are at their highest during cruise season, however, so dont expect to find many cheap options. Some hotels offer cruise packages that include transport to the terminal, but these are generally not big money-savers, as taxi or Uber fare to the pier is fairly inexpensive and Shuttle Express offers scheduled transport from many downtown hotels to the cruise terminals at a rate of just $12 per person.

If youre sailing on a Norwegian or Oceana cruise that departs from the Bell Street Terminal , The Edgewater and are both within a short walk of the pier.

Where Is My Cruise Ship

Layout: Seattle

Passengers cruising with Oceania Cruises or Norwegian Cruise Lines will embark/disembark from the Bell Street Pier Cruise Terminal at Pier 66, located directly on our central waterfront. At this cruise terminal, you are within walking distance of Pike Place Market, Seattle Aquarium, Seattle Great Wheel, and Olympic Sculpture Park. Seattle Center and the Space Needle are also nearby.

Passengers cruising aboard Carnival Cruise Lines, Celebrity Cruises, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises or Royal Caribbean Cruises will embark/disembark from Smith Cove Cruise Terminal at Pier 91. Smith Cove is located at the north end of the Elliott Bay waterfront, at the base of the beautiful Magnolia neighborhood, just 10-minutes from the citys retail core. This is one of the worlds only facilities where ships can connect to the citys power grid, greatly reducing air emissions.

Cruise Ships Returning To Seattle As Pandemic Restrictions Ease

The big tourism business may give the city an economic boost, but it also reopens a clash between business and the environment.

Signage welcomes would-be passengers down an escalator into the Port of Seattle’s cruise ship terminal at Pier 66 in downtown Seattle on April 29, 2021.

The floor-to-ceiling windows in the Olympic Room at the Bell Street Cruise Terminal at Pier 66 frame a postcard view of the Olympic Mountains set against Elliott Bay. In March 2020, Port of Seattle cruise operations director Mike McLaughlin wasnt admiring the view. Instead he was conducting a tabletop exercise with local and federal officials to game out possible scenarios if a cruise ship suffering an outbreak of the novel coronavirus docked in Elliott Bay.

No ships struck by illness ended up in Seattle. Indeed, no cruise ships sailed into local waters in 2020, as the Alaska cruise season was canceled by a No Sail Order from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But in late April 2021, McLaughlin found himself back in an otherwise dormant facility as Congress prepared to rejuvenate the Seattle-to-Alaska cruise business.

Theres a sense of excitement, he said. This door is partly opening up.

The door opened fully on May 24, when President Joe Biden signed the bipartisan Alaska Tourism Restoration Act, which provides a temporary exemption for cruise ships to sail from Washington to Alaska without making a stop in Canada, as required in an 1886 law.

Port Of Call: Icy Strait Point

In Icy Strait Point, guests will see an incredible new gondola that transports visitors for free from the cruise arrival area to a restored cannery and museum, sharing local history and the Tlingit native culture. Here guests can peruse arts and crafts, savor local salmon, and tour the Hoonah Packing Company facilities of 1912.

For adventure seekers, Icy Strait Point is also home to a brand-new zipline course. As the worlds largest zip ride, guests will take in a scenic mountain descent of 1,330 feet with speeds of up to 60 miles per hour. Theres also an adventure park with ropes course, ATV and kayak adventures, whale watching excursions, and hiking trails.

Guests opting to explore the area without an excursion will want to stroll the Hoonah Veterans Memorial Sea Walk which offers a pleasant 1.3-mile route into the small town of Hoonah. Once in town, there are independent shops to peruse, a brewpub, seafood restaurant and the Yaakw Kahidi Cultural Center where visitors are invited to learn about traditional canoe and totem carvings. In lieu of walking, Hoonah also offers an affordable shuttle to and from town.
