Which Cabins Are Best On Cruise Ships

Best For A Large Balcony

Inside Cabins on Cruise Ships: Whose is Best? Video

Aft cabins typically have some of the largest balconies on a cruise ship as there are usually just a few rooms lined up along the back of a ship giving each one more space for a bigger balcony. In particular, aft cabins located on the corners of the ship often have wraparound balconies, creating enough space for chairs, loungers and sometimes a small dining table.

Also good for a larger balcony are cabins located on the so-called “hump” of a cruise ship that is designed with a curvy outline. Cabins located where the ship transitions from a narrower to a wider width have angled balconies that are roomier than a typical veranda. Hump cabins can be found on select Celebrity and Royal Caribbean ships.

Cabins Under The Buffet

Cabins located under the buffet can be noisy with foot traffic during the day, and it may be noticeable during the morning, especially if youre a light sleeper.

We actually had a funny situation that happened to us on a past cruise, in our cabin under Princess Cruises Caribe Cafe. There must have been a rolling cart that wasnt attached, as one night we kept hearing the sound of rollin back and forth above our heads!

It was really the only time during all our cruises, so this doesnt happen often. However, its a good reminder that booking cabins flanked between two passenger decks is always a good idea.

Virgin Voyages Seriously Suites

Virgin Voyages is new to the cruise industry, but it knows whats up. Positioning itself as a hip anti-cruise line, it has built its first vessel, Scarlet Lady, to include 46 cabins for single passengers, 40 of which are insides and six of which provide rare forward-facing views of the sea.

Theyre a bit small at just larger than 100 square feet, but these Seriously Suites are cleverly named and even more cleverly appointed with full-sized beds and sleek, stylish furniture, decor and bathrooms.

Norwegian was a forerunner in the solo accommodation space, introducing its studio cabins on Norwegian Epic in 2010. The rooms are on the small side at just 100 square feet. Theyre also insides , but theyre great if youre not planning to spend much time in your room.

Whats unique about NCLs studios is that they allow occupants access to the studio lounge, where they can meet other cruisers sailing alone and partake in daily snacks. Studio cabins are available on Norwegian Epic, Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway, Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Bliss and Pride of America.

Best Cruise Ships for Cabins: 2019 Cruisers

On May 24, 2016, a new “Lightweight Composite Cabin” design was unveiled in Southampton, England. The innovation was funded by the UK Government. Involved in the cabin’s designing, engineering, manufacturing and furbishing were the companies Carnival UK , Gurit Ltd , Lloyd’s Register Group Ltd , PE Composites Ltd , Trimline Ltd and the University of Southampton.

The new modular cabin prototype is half the weight of a typical cruise room. It also fully complies with the FTP Code’s requirements . Reducing the ship’s topdecks weight is an important issue for naval architects as the trend for building large-capacity cruise vessels continues. The new module’s halved weight opens up opportunities for adding more passenger rooms to newbuild ships, without adding to the ship’s DWT weight.

Not Quite The Wake Up You Were Expecting

Whilst were on the topic of noise, make sure to check the decks above and below as well as whats next door. Whilst at first it might seem like a good idea to get that cabin below the buffet who doesnt want first pick at breakfast? youll soon regret your decision if planned on enjoying a lie-in. Even before the restaurant opens, the crew is hard at work setting up and preparing the food, which can lead to a rude awakening in the early hours of the morning. Sleeping directly under the sun deck? Dont worry about packing your alarm clock the crew members clear the lounge chairs from the deck every evening and bring them back in the morning. Equally risky are cabins located underneath the theatre, the casino, a bar, or a dance club. There, you can expect loud music late into the night. The best location is a cabin located between passenger decks, where youll have other passenger cabins above and below you.

Standard Cruise Ship Cabins

Many cruise ships today have standard cabins of similar size and amenities, with the price differential being the location. The least expensive, inside standard cabins on a mainstream cruise ship run from about 120 square feet to 180 square feet. Since most cruise ships are relatively new or have been refurbished, the cabins usually are tastefully decorated with twin beds that can be pushed together to make a queen-sized bed for couples. The television usually has news, sports, local on-ship channels for broadcasting information on shore excursions or from guest lecturers, and movies. Cruise Ship Cabins: How To Get The Best, And Avoid the Worst ?

I have a friend who will only cruise in an inside cabin. Why? Because her children are early risers! And she feels the darkness that inside cabins offers tricks her children into sleeping past 5am. Inside cabins offer a lot of flexibility with price, and if you are a family of 5 interconnecting cabins may offer the best solution.

The downsides: you never know what time of day it is. Now this works for some people. However we really struggled with it.

Seasickness The Middles For You

The cabin category isnt the only thing to take into account when selecting your perfect cabin. Youve also got to think about the best location on the ship. This is important if you suffer from sea sickness. The movement of the waves is most noticeable fore and aft of the ship and least noticeable in the middle. Also bear in mind that the further down you are towards the bottom of the ship, the less youll feel the rolling of the waves. If you know youve got a sensitive stomach, its definitely a good idea to book a cabin in the middle and down below. A balcony cabin or suite also has advantages, because fresh air and a view of the horizon can keep you from feeling unwell.

If youre new to cruising, you might not know that cabins on most ships are designed for a minimum of two people.

This means the lines expect each room to bring in revenue in the form of at least two cruise fares. If you choose to sail by yourself in a stateroom meant for two or more, youre almost always charged the double-occupancy rate, meaning youll pay two full cruise fares even though its just you in the room.

With solo cruising on the rise, cruise lines are beginning to take notice by adding accommodations for one to their newest ships. Some have even outfitted older vessels to offer accommodations for singles. Although they can be pricey, they usually represent some savings versus what youd pay for a voyage in a cabin meant for two.

These are the best types of cabins for solo cruisers to book across the major cruise lines.

Cabins at the very front or very back of a cruise ship are most likely to have the best views, as they offer the widest vistas of the ocean stretching out behind or in front of the ship — or in the case of forward cabins, your next port of call. Views are especially fantastic on ships that offer front cabins with oversized floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows. Select Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line ships fall into that category.

Most ships also offer a basic selection of toiletries, such as sample shampoos or soaps. For specific details about what different ships offer, contact the individual cruise lines.

One note of caution: each cabin may contain several bottled sodas, deluxe room service menus, or other luxuries that may cost additional fees. If you are unsure about whether an item is complimentary, ask your cabin steward or the ship’s information desk for clarification.

    Best For Light Sleepers

If you want the quietest cabin possible, eliminate cabins located by noisy areas. Do not book cabins located directly under the pool deck or buffet, too close to the elevators, across the hall from a laundry or crew entry door, and under or over the casino, theater or nightclub. You’ll also want to skip cabins located low and forward or at the back .

You’ll need to study a deck plan for the best placement or call on a travel agent who knows the ship you’re booking. However, a general rule of thumb is to surround yourself with other passenger cabins — on either side of you, across from you and above and below you.
