Savannah Says No To New $70m Cruise Terminal

The news late last month that Carnival Cruises will end its trips out of Norfolk was a blow to city leaders whoâd banked on the $37.4 million Half Moone terminal being a cruise ship center for decades to come.

In Savannah, Ga., it was an affirmation to those fighting a proposed new $70 million cruise terminal that the business wasnât worth chasing.

Savannahâs City Council effectively killed the terminal idea on the same day that Carnival announced it would pull out of Norfolk after October.

The Georgia seaport had spent $327,000 to study the proposal. That, the council decided, was enough.

âI am extremely concerned about the experience of other cities making such a large investment in something that, as far as Iâm concerned, is speculative,â Alderwoman-at-large Carol Bell was quoted by the Savannah Morning News as saying. âAnd the other thing, Iâm not sure a real business case has been made.â

âI thought this was a dumb idea before I got into office, and the closer I got to it as I sat on council, I thought it was a worse idea,â Alderman Tom Bordeaux added.

So Savannah is one port that Norfolk officials wonât have to worry about competing with as they work to lure Carnival back.

Carnival Cruise Line From Charleston South Carolina

For many travelers along the East Coast, Floridas many ports, including Miami and Fort Lauderdale, were long the go-to places for starting a cruise. But smaller cruise ports began popping up along the Atlantic seaboard, with Charleston being one of them.

The Port of Charleston, which includes the Union Pier Cruise Terminal, is situated in the Southern cityss historical district, adjacent to many restaurants, shops, and hotels. In 2013, a new terminal is scheduled to open in the area, as part of a few concept plan involving a move to the northern end of the pier. This way, Charlestons historical charm remains intact while freeing up the citys infrastructure around the terminal.

Currently, just Carnival Cruise Lines departs from Charlestons terminal, with the Carnival Fantasy leaving year round to the Bahamas, Bermuda, or the Caribbean.

International Cruise Ship Terminal Planned For Savannah

August 26, 2000 | Staff

Chatham County officials are overseeing a plan to build an international cruise ship terminal on the Savannah River near downtown Savannah, said John Snedeker, chair of the Chatham County Port Planning Committee.

The terminal that is to be built on private land and could include a hotel, offices, restaurants and shops, is estimated to be a $250-300 million project, Mr. Snedeker told GlobalFax in a telephone interview. He added that the landowner is willing to sell and several companies are interested in investing in the project, although no deals have yet been made.

Cruise ships carrying between 1,100-2,200 passengers would begin their tours from Savannah, which means that people from all over the country and the world would gain exposure to Georgia, he said.

They would fly into Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport, take a flight to Savannah where they would stay overnight, probably eat at the restaurants and go shopping, and in the morning depart from the terminal, he said. The ripple effect would be tremendous.

Mr. Snedeker, who is a maritime shipping consultant, said that likely destinations for the ships would be Bermuda, the northern Bahamas and, on longer cruises, Mexico and Central America. Several cruise companies, including Carnival Cruise Lines, Commodore Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, have expressed interest in using the terminal.
