Fly In Two Days Early

Norwegian Jewel 7 Day Alaskan Cruise Highlights – Vancouver to Seward

When you have to fly to a cruise, you should always fly in at least one day before the cruise begins to guard against travel delays impeding your ability to board the ship.

If you are flying from the east coast, coming in two days before the cruise is an even better idea because of the time change.

The shift up to three hours later means you’ll be struggling to stay up past 9pm. By coming in two days early, you have more time to adjust to the west coast time zone and once you get on the ship, be able to stay up later for the fun evening activities.

Another advantage to coming in more than a day early is it provides you ample time to explore Vancouver without feeling rushed, or fatigued from the trip over.

Us Customs And Border Protection

As passengers embarking in Vancouver are considered to be entering U.S. jurisdiction once they board the cruise ship, you will go through U.S. Customs and Border Protection immediately following the passenger screening process. Ten BorderXpress Automated Passport Control kiosks are available for use by eligible US and Canadian passengers at the Canada Place cruise terminal with the goal of improving passenger experience. US Customs and Border protection is the final step before boarding your vessel.

What To Bring On An Alaska Cruise

When it comes to packing for an Alaska cruise, your mantra should always be: dress in layers. On the same day, you might be warm in town but chilly on your tour to a glacier. If you plan on hiking, kayaking or riding on a dog sled, youll need the appropriate activewear.

Definitely pack for rain consider skipping the umbrella and instead bringing a wide-brimmed waterproof hat, rain jacket, rain pants and waterproof shoes or boots.

This is also the trip for a camera with good telephoto lenses and binoculars. For more on what to bring on an Alaska cruise, check out our Alaska cruise packing list.

You Can See College Fjord

When cruising to Alaska, most cruise passengers choose between Glacier Bay National Park or Hubbard Glacier for visitation. However, some one-way itineraries include both Glacier Bay and College Fjord.

As the name suggests, the tidewater glaciers in this Alaska fjord are named for famous colleges. On one side, the glaciers are named for the womens colleges, while the opposite side contains the mens colleges.

Should the Alaska weather co-operate, cruisers will see five valley glaciers and five tidewater glaciers? The tidewater glaciers or glaciers that touch the ocean are the most impressive.

Unlike Glacier Bay, where the glaciers are spread apart, cruise passengers can see College Fjords glaciers side-by-side.

Harvard is Alaskas second-largest tidewater glacier and the largest in College Fjord. Like Hubbard Glacier, it sometimes treats cruise ship passengers to spectacular calving.

If youre seeking the ultimate Alaska cruising itinerary, I suggest a back-to-back cruise. With fourteen days instead of seven, youll enjoy glacier viewing overload.

Your one-way cruise will see Glacier Bay and Hubbard Glacier. In comparison, the other route repeats Glacier Bay with College Fjord.

Alaska Cruise Tips | Top Tips for Cruising Alaska | Princess Cruises

Just like Alaska, it will likely rain and then go back to being sunny, and then alternate between chilly and warm, before restarting the cycle again.

Vancouver’s weather can vary greatly, so plan on experiencing it all. They key is to have a good waterproof jacket, along with warm clothes. But don’t rule out a warm spell, because it is summer after all.

While you probably won’t need super warm clothing , being able to deal with the rain is a good idea while you’re exploring the city.

Winter Cruises To Alaska

My partner and I are heading to Canada for 6 weeks next winter and Im wondering if its possible to do a cruise towards Alaska during December? Is there icebreaker tours or something like that?

the pacific ocean along that coast does not freeze.

the cruise season is over for most cruise lines at the end of September but if you want basic ferry service you can do that but they are just that, a ferry service and no entertainment or luxury of any kind. and if you want to fly back there the only flights are to Seattle.

for BC portion there is and for Alaska

If you want to see the coast, a winter destination is Tofino which promotes the area as stormwatching season. We picked 4 nights in Feb hoping for some good a good ocean storm but came away with great sunsets but no storm so you either have to be lucky with your timing or stay longer.

The Alaska cruise ship season ends in October. By then the weather up there, not the best at any time, turns really ugly with torrential rain, storms and really long nights. December is much worse!

I have also never heard of icebreakers up there, but they may have them? Maybe on the Arctic Ocean?

Thanks for your responses, I’m thinking I have gotten the geography wrong and what thought was along that coast actually isn’t. Thanks for your help!

When To Book An Alaska Cruise

The best time to book an Alaska cruise is right when a cruise line first opens bookings on that sailing, often more than a year in advance. Youll have your pick of itineraries and cabins balcony cabins are very popular in this scenic destination and often the best fares. Because Alaska has such a short season with a limited number of ships and is a dream trip for many, cruises are in high demand and people plan early.

If you wait to book, youre not entirely out of luck. Cruise lines often run sales in the fall or in the early months of the year . You can take advantage of discounted fares, free upgrades or complimentary add-ons, such as Wi-Fi, gratuities, restaurant meals, beverage packages and tours. Some of the most desirable cabins might be sold out being flexible about your sail date or itinerary can help.

In general, waiting until the last minute is not the best idea, unless you live in Seattle or Vancouver and dont need to book flights. While some less preferred sail dates or cabin categories may have availability a few months out spurring cruise lines to drop rates, you might have trouble finding affordable airfare and pre- or post-cruise hotel accommodations that do not eat up your cruise savings.

The closest port to Alaskan waters, Vancouver invites cruise passengers to spend leisurely days and nights exploring Skagway, Ketchikan, Juneau and Glacier Bay, with plenty of time in-between to experience a myriad of shipboard activities. Between April and October, most cruises departing from Vancouver head to Alaska throughout the rest of the year, there are also sailings to California, Hawaii and points further afield.

Despite its swanky glass and steel skyline, Vancouver maintains a warm, welcoming appeal. It is often called a city of neighborhoods, and most cruise passengers with time to spare find the nickname holds quite true. The architecturally noteworthy Canada Place, which houses the Vancouver cruise terminal, sits at the border of two particularly unique neighborhoods: the relaxed waterside Coal Harbor and foodie friendly Gastown. A visit to each is a must before boarding for a late afternoon cruise departure.

Princess Cruises and Holland America run this northbound route from Vancouver to Whittier. The first full day is typically spent cruising along the west coast of Canada on the way to the protected waters of Alaskas Inside Passage. Passengers enjoy their first shore day in either Ketchikan or Icy Strait depending on the ship. Port calls in Juneau and Skagway follow.

The cruise spends its final day sailing through College Fjord in Prince William Sound before docking in the tiny port town of Whittier. Cruise passengers can conveniently transfer to Anchorage via the Park Connection Motorcoach, which leaves mid-morning and reaches Anchorage just after noon, or aboard an evening Alaska Railroad train.

You Spend Less Time At Sea

Since Vancouver, Canada, is closer to Alaska, youll spend less time at sea. It takes three days to reach Alaska from California and only a day and a half from Vancouver.

Even though Seattle is 110 nautical miles south of Vancouver, it can take slightly longer to reach Alaska. Many of the Seattle departures arrive in Juneau in the afternoon.

With Juneau being the capital, cruise passengers need a full day to enjoy the many attractions. So, choose an itinerary that arrives in the morning and spends a good twelve hours in Juneau.

Many cruise passengers visit Mendenhall Glacier by shuttle on a Juneau port day. Since the last shuttle leaves the Mendenhall Visitors Center at 5:30 pm, you wouldnt have much time to explore if your cruise ship arrived at 1:30 pm.

How Far From Vancouver Airport Is The Cruise Terminal

The Vancouver Cruise Terminal is about a 30 minute Taxi ride from the airport. You can alternatively take the light rail which takes between 25 to 40 minutes dependent on delays. Trains typically arrive once every 5-10 minutes and are only a short five minute walk to the Cruise Terminal from the station. If you are short on time and are willing to pay the higher price, we recommend taking a taxi.

Canada Opens To Cruise Ships

A lot depended on what the Canadian Government would do to allow cruise ships to operate within its borders this year. Luckily, the Canadians implemented health protocols that largely mimicked those in place in the United States, with some minor changes.

The reopening of Canadian ports to the cruise industry is a bold and important move that significantly expands the array of travel opportunities available to guests while boosting the economies of the Canadian and Alaska destinations we visit by generating important revenue and job opportunities, said John Padgett, Princess Cruises president.

We know firsthand how cherished these voyages are to both guests and those destinations following our shortened but successful return to Alaska in 2021 that was made possible with the passing of the Alaska Tourism Restoration Act.

Caribbean Princess will be the first cruise ship in two years to make an appearance in Canada on April 6 of this year. She will be making a stopover in Victoria, BC, followed by a stop in Vancouver on April 7.

The reopening of Canadian ports means that cruises on the east coast of Canada can also take place this year. The popular Princess Cruises New England and Canada voyages depart from Quebec and New York, visiting Halifax, Saint John, Cape Breton Island, and Charlottetown.

The 2022 season features 16 departures and six unique itineraries on Enchanted Princess and Caribbean Princess from July through October.
