Key West Nears Limits Reducing Number Of Cruise Ship Visits

A new plan has been presented in the long-running battle to limit cruise ship calls at Floridas popular tourist destination of Key West. Nearly two years after residents voted to dramatically reduce cruise ship calls at the port, the City Council has struck a compromise that will reduce the number of calls while still permitting all cruise ships to visit the port.

At a meeting last week, the Key West City Council read out its compromise measure which will be presented and finalized at the next meeting scheduled for April 5. At issue was the November 2020 referendum in which residents voted to limit the size of cruise ships based on passenger capacity, restrict the number of people coming ashore each day from cruise ships, and favor cruise ships with the best environmental records. While the residents voted overwhelmingly in support of the three restrictions, Floridas legislature and governor overrode the limitations in a retroactive law passed last summer.

Key West has three piers, two of which are controlled by the city and a third that is leased in perpetuity to a private operator. Since the beginning of the action, opponents and lawyers have argued that the City Council had no legal authority to restrict operations at the private pier and could face lawsuits if it attempted to impose the restrictions.

Most Reliable Cruise Ship Schedule

I plan to visit Key West between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and I’m trying to figure out when the cruise ships are in port so I can avoid them if possible. Google finds multiple sites with Key West cruise ship schedules, but they have conflicting data. Which is the most reliable?

I found the same question in an old forum post, but it was never answered there.

During the period when you are planning on visiting, there are only two instances where there are no ships scheduled to be in port for two consecutive days, They are Nov, 29 & 30 and Dec. 13 & 14. Most other days, there will be 2 or 3 ships docked.

I’ve used it many many times and it’s never been wrong – yet. I have found the cityofkeywest one wrong, but only on a couple of occasions out of 40 or 50 times I’ve used it. It might have been just the luck of the draw, I’m not saying one is always accurate and the other not.

Keep an eye on the times also. You find sometimes one or all of them leave by lunch time so you can plan around that and still get a nice quiet afternoon.

As partpricer says, it won’t be easy to find days with no ships in at that time of year, but depending on what you’re doing the cruise ship crowds aren’t always that noticeable.

So in this case, it appear that the Key West City schedule is more reliable, but I guess I’ll know for sure if I visit on one of those dates.

Cruise Ships Return to Key West – November 27, 2021

In 1969 the Port of Key West received its first regularly scheduled cruise ship it was the SUNWARD. She called on Key West once a month. The Sunward moored at either the Navys Mole or Pier B facility. Records indicate that between 1969 and 1984 the Port of Key West received 266 port calls. In the 1999 fiscal year 415 cruise ships called on the Port of Key West allowing 597,009 passengers to experience Key Wests charm, many making return trips to complete their Key West experience.It wasnt until 1984 that the City Commission, at the recommendation of City staff, made improvements to the City-owned Mallory Dock, making it a full cruise ship docking facility.

Port Of Roatan Cruise Ship Schedule 2021

The Port of Roatan Cruise Ship Schedule provides arrival and departure times for the various cruise lines that dock at the Coxen Hole port of call. Also known as Town Center at Port of Roatan, this cruise port is one of two ports of call serving cruise ship passengers visiting Roatan, Honduras. The two pier terminal allows for two docked cruise ship and up to four ships tenders simultaneously. Tenders at 400 passengers every 15 minutes. About Key Wests Cruise Ship Ports

There are three docks that the cruise ships will dock at, and they are listed below. And, depending on which dock your ship moors at, as well as what your last port of call was, it could take you anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes to disembark the ship and get to the downtown area to start enjoying Key West Activities and Key West Attractions. So, this is something that should be considered when making Key West activity reservations.

As of 2022, cruise ships of all sizes will continue to visit Key West. However, only one cruise ship at a time will be in port. The privately run Pier B will host virtually all cruise ships visiting the island. The two city-controlled docks will only host smaller ships with up to a 1300 person capacity. And, only if no ships are at Pier B.

The Outer Mole Pier

Truman Waterfront is US Navy property. So, access to this area is restricted and requires all cruise passengers to go through a security checkpoint. But, to make things go smoother, you should make sure to have your ID and cruise card at the ready. And, since this is the closest dock to Fort Zachary Taylor State Park, you can walk right over to the best beach on the island. Or, Historic Tours of America provides free transportation service to and from the cruise ship this is the only way to get back to the Outer Mole.

Disney Cruise Line announces their cruise dates and itineraries for only a few months at a time: January through April, then May through September and finally, September through December. Once the new itineraries come out, booking begins just a day or two later, first to Castaway Club members and then to the general public.

The people who book earliest almost always get the lowest possible price. History Of Key West And Cruise Ships

Key West is a Port of Call for several cruise lines, including Carnival and Disney. The first regularly scheduled cruise ship, Sunward, arrived in 1969. Since then, the number of ships to visit Key West has grown exponentially.

In 2020, Key West residents voted to drastically reduce the number of ships that dock in Key West. However, Florida State laws voided that vote. So, the cruise ships are a point of contention for some people on the island. Now, we will just have to wait and see how everything eventually plays out on the political stage. Disney Vacation Club Cruises

The Disney Vacation Club member cruises for 2022 will be the 3-night Bahamian cruise on June 14 on the Disney Wish, and the 7-night Alaskan cruise on August 29 on the Disney Wonder. Both cruises are sold out, but a waitlist is available.

DVC member cruises are only open to Disney Vacation Club members who have purchased at least some of their vacation points directly from Disney . Members can use their vacation points to book the cruise or can pay cash rates. Typically DVC cruises are significantly more expensive than similar cruises for the general public, but guests will be given a wide variety of DVC special gifts and will get to experience some exclusive member events including talks by special guests including artists, imagineers and/or actors from classic Disney movies.

Whether the DVC member cruise is worth booking is a personal judgment call. The extra events are difficult or impossible to experience any other way. The various DVC gifts are usually a mix of the usual kinds of tote bags, pens, and so forth you can get by attending a DVC meeting or buying a new DVC contract, plus at least a few special and unique items. Some people love the DVC member cruises and try to go on each one. Others go once and feel its not worth the extra money.
