This was supposed to be a big year for big-ship cruise fans.
Back in January, before COVID-19 halted cruising around the world, two of the biggest big-ship cruise lines Norwegian Cruise Line and MSC Cruises were just starting up sailings with their biggest ships ever. Another major brand, Carnival Cruise Line, was just months away from rolling out its own record-sized vessel.
Royal Caribbean, too, had just brought out a new giant of the seas just 21 months earlier.

In short, until the new coronavirus hit, the year was shaping up to be a particularly exciting one for big-ship lovers who always want to be on the latest-and-greatest vessels.
The excitement, alas, got squashed with the arrival of COVID. But the Year of the Big-Ship Bonanza hasnt been canceled. Its just been postponed.
Already, one of the vessels MSC Grandiosa is sailing again in the Mediterranean, albeit on cruises that only are open to residents of Europes Schengen countries.

How Does The Pioneering Spirit Compare To The Titanic
The Pioneering Spirit is 8.7 times larger than the Titanic was in terms of gross tonnage. The Pioneering Spirit is 4.4 times wider than the Titanic was and is 77% longer.

Wonder Of The Seas Inaugural Voyage Set For March 2022
The worlds largest cruise ship has been delivered to Royal Caribbean in the past week. The gargantuan ship is currently in Marseille where it will be receiving some final details before heading across the Atlantic for its maiden cruise.
The new ship, named Wonder of the Seas is the fifth of six Oasis class ships in Royal Caribbeans fleet. The sixth, although currently unnamed, has been ordered, and is expected to make its first voyage in 2024
The 236,000 tonne Wonder was due to be completed and delivered in 2021, but pandemic fueled shipyard closures delayed its unveiling until March 2022. As well as manufacturing delays, Wonders home port was changed at the last minute.
Originally, the ship was set to call Shanghai home, becoming the first Oasis class cruise liner to have a homeport in Asia. But promising projections for the industry in America and Europe combined with heavy restrictions in Asia prompted Royal Caribbean to set up base in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Whether it may be transferred to Shanghai in the future is unclear, but plans are well underway for its first Caribbean trip in March.
One of the most distinctive features of the new model is the addition of an eight neighborhood on board. The neighborhoods are designated areas of the ship, segmented for ease of navigation.

In the cruise world, bigger means more: more amenities, more days at sea, and of course, more people. Now, MSC Cruises just said its going all-in on more by placing an order for its biggest cruise ship everand itll fit the most passengers of any cruise ship on Earth.
Called MSCs World Class, the new fleet of ships, built by STX France, will host 2,750 cabins, for a total maximum occupancy of 6,850 guests. The worlds current largest cruise ship, Royal Caribbeans Harmony of the Seas, fits 6,780 at its maximum occupancy. For perspective: a little over 100 years ago, the worlds largest ship, the ill-fated Titanic, fit only 2,344 passengersabout a third of the size of MSCs new World Class.
Currently, MSC has orders with STX France for two ships, to be inaugurated in 2022 and 2024, with options for two more ships in 2025 and 2026. The boats dimensions are quite staggering, measuring 1,082 feet by 154 feet. For comparison, an American football field is 360 feet by 160 feet, so each ship is nearly the size of three football fields. Theyll also contain a massive 200,000 GRTthats gross register tons, or the total volume permanently enclosed inside the ship. In other words, thats a lotbut just slightly behind Harmony of the Seas 226,963 GRT.

A Busy Month For Msc Cruises
It has been a busy month for the fastest-growing cruise line in the world. In early November, MSC Preziosa became the 12th ship in the fleet to return to service by starting sailings from Brazil in South America.
On November 18, the cruise line celebrated the float out of MSC Seascape, which will join the fleet in November 2022. The cruise line also had the first-ever naming ceremony at a cruise line private island for the new MSC Seashore.
