Some of the worlds biggest cruise lines in recent weeks have finally begun announcing concrete plans to restart sailings out of U.S. ports.
MSC Cruises, for instance, on Monday said it would resume departures out of Miami on Aug. 2. The announcement came just hours after Carnival Cruise Line said it would restart cruises out of Galveston, Texas, on July 3. Silversea, Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises and Holland America also have been revealing restart plans.
Still, even as they gear up for a U.S. restart, cruise lines are saying they only will operate a few ships out of U.S. ports at first. The plan at least for now is to bring additional ships into operation gradually over many months.
So, which cruise ships, specifically, will be restarting operations out of U.S. ports in the coming months and from which specific ports?

Carnival Cruise Terminal 3
In late-April 2017 at Port Canaveral started construction works of a new cruise terminal. The facility is on the site of Cruise Terminal 3 , west of Jetty Park and east of The Cove . On June 7, 2017, engineering and design works for the new terminal were officially approved. Canaveral Port Authority Commissioners approved USD 1,2 million funding for CH2M Engineerings project management contract. This was the first phase of the 2-year work plan to construct a modern facility with capacity to serve vessels up to 8,000 passengers. At the new passenger terminal can berth even the worlds largest cruise vessels of RCIs Oasis-class. CH2M Engineering provided engineering, support services and waterside design for the new Terminal 3.
The projects budget is USD 163 million , of which US$50M were contributed by Carnival Corporation. Ranked the USAs largest single building project, it included demolition of ports oldest terminal, construction of a brand new 2-story building , upgrading the existing berth and building a new parking garage, roadway and utility improvements. This 20-months long, multi-phased project included 5 separate contracts. Demolition works of the existing Terminal 3 building started in April 2018, at the cost of USD 210,000.
Construction works officially started on March 18, 2019, and the Terminal was completed in September 2020. At the new CT3 terminal was homeported Carnivals largest vessel . The new liner is LNG-bunkered by a barge dockside.
Ovation Of The Seas Sails To Alaska
Ovation of the Seas will join Serenade of the Seas in Alaska this week when she sails from her homeport of Seattle. Ovation of the Seaswill be cruising from Seattle on 7-night cruises starting August 13 to Skagway, Sitka, and Juneau, Alaska. The ships will also sail through the inside passage, giving guests an extraordinary view, especially from the 360° North Star.
Cruises onboard the Quantum-class ship to Alaska are available through October for all guests aged 12 and above who can present proof of COVID-19 vaccination, with the final dose of their vaccine administered at least 14 days before sailing. Guests under the age of 12 will need to undergo testing before the cruise, when arriving at the terminal, and while onboard.

Note: Port’s FY runs from October 1 through September 30 .
In FY2017, the cruise port handled 4,52+ million passengers . The number of multi-day passengers was 7,1% increase over 2016. Statistics showed that just in March 2017, the number of visiting cruiseship tourists was 469,847. This was the Port’s 1-month record and a 19% increase over March 2016. Port’s FY2017 total revenues were USD 47,4 million .
For FY2018, the seaport reported a record year with USD 103,75 million in total revenues . Cargo and cruise shipping volumes were also an all-time high. The number of handled cruise ship passengers increased by 7,7% – to 4,568431 million. Port’s handled cargo tonnage increased by 6,9% – to 6,404944 million tons. Port’s total economic output was USD 3,9 billion with around 32650 jobs supported including 17200 port workers .
For FY2019, the port had ~5% growth in revenues from cruise shipping. By homeporting operations Port Canaveral is currently ranked the world’s 2nd-busiest cruise port with handled in 2019 total 4,634154 million passengers .
For season 2019, the cruise port reported a record berth booking with estimated 4,7+ million passengers.
