Why Are Cruises Recommended For Solo Travellers

Cruises can be some of the most social holidays youll find. Youll often dine on the same table each evening with the same people, which creates a great opportunity to make friends. Many cruise lines also offer events and meet-ups especially for solo travellers, and you may find that all the single cabins are located in the same part of the ship, so its easy to meet up with your fellow travellers should you wish. Should you prefer your own company, cruise ships are large enough that youll find it easy to escape into a world of your own.

Money Saving Tip: Pretend You Are Not Solo

One of my best tips is to price out a cruise booking as a solo cruiser, as well as making up a second person in the room to see which option is cheaper.

Royal Caribbean’s system sometimes penalizes solo cruisers so much with the single supplement fee, that it is not uncommon to find a lower price by paying for a phantom second guest who never actually shows up.

Essentially, you place your name and the name of someone else on the reservation. This could be a family member or friend who has absolutely no intention of sailing. It does not really matter, since this person will not be sailing, and there is no penalty or issue if a guest does not show up for the cruise.

While you will be paying for a second person that is not going on the cruise, in many cases this is still cheaper than a booking that only has one guest on the reservation.

It should be noted that when you show up for the cruise without that second person, you will be refunded port fees and taxes for the second person, as well as still receive double Crown and Anchor points for cruising solo.

The best part about this tip? You get an even bigger stateroom than if you booked a studio cabin!

Learn The Tricks To Getting Around Single Supplement Fees On Your Next Cruise

If you go solo on a cruise, it might mean you pay almost double for your trip. Solo travelers thinking about taking a cruise might be surprised to learn that most cruise lines will charge a single supplement. This premium is charged to travelers who book a cabin for only one person.

The reasons behind this are simple: Cruise lines are counting on two people per cabin and they are prepared to charge a fee for those who want to occupy a stateroom solo. This means the cost of a single supplement can almost double the cruise fare.

While such a fee is waived on some cruise lines, it isn’t often the norm. Single cruise supplements are at the discretion of the cruise line and in some cases, to promote bookings, cruise lines will waive the fee to generate sales. If a passenger is charged a single supplement, it is usually for the cruise fare only, not taxes or port charges on the second berth in the room.

Top Tips For Getting A Great Solo Cruise Deal

Book early. This specifically applies to those no-supplement studio cabins they are very hard to get on some itineraries, so booking a year or more in advance could be necessary. When booking standard cabins, six to eight months out is about right for booking shoulder season or repositioning cruises at the best price and for finding luxury lines waiving or lowering the single supplement.

Related:

Book late. Take advantage of your solo travel flexibility by keeping an eye out for last-minute deals that might put a cruise within your budget range, even with the supplement.

Study the cruise lines. The more you know about a cruise line, the easier it is to spot a deal and to know whether the vibe onboard is ideal for you as a single cruiser. The Cruise Critic member boards are a great place to read the opinions and experiences of other solo cruisers.

Related:

Skip the travel agent. Even though agents can sometimes help you find the best singles cruise deals, they have little incentive for doing so. If an agent books you on a cruise with a double-the-standard-cruise fare single supplement, they make more money. Unless it’s an agent you have used before and trust to find a bargain, you might be better off on your own — in more ways than one.

Cruises For Solo Travellers

Best Cruise Lines for Solo Women Travellers

Singles cruises are just getting better and better. Fortunately, the days of sharing a cabin with someone you have never met in order to cut down on costs are long gone. Cruise lines have come a long way in what they can offer solo travellers and most operators have added single cabins to ships in recent years. P& O Cruises are amongst the cruise lines offering a range of cabins to single travellers, including inside, outside and balcony options, while Fred Olsen also allocate a large number of single cabins to each ship, to name a few.

In addition to single cabins, cruise lines now offer even more features specifically aimed at single cruisers. These include solo traveller welcome meetings, dance hosts and dining tables reserved for solo travellers. Fred Olsen cater extremely well for single passengers, offering more dedicated activities than almost any other operator.

Single occupancy supplements do often apply to bookings with most cruise lines, though operators do have offers which become available with either heavily reduced single supplement cruises or better still, NO single supplement cruises. Below weve hand picked some of the current single cruise travellers deals available for solo travellers in 2022.

How Cruise Lines Accommodate Solo Cruisers

The easiest way to skirt the single supplement is to find a studio cabin built for one guest. They’re smaller, yes, but considerably less expensive. For example, a studio on a Norwegian ship might cost $1,099 compared to the cost of booking a double-occupancy room with a single supplement that sets you back $1,898.

Norwegian Cruise Line has been at the forefront of catering to solo travelers. Norwegian Bliss, which launches next month, and Norwegian Escape both offer 82 studio staterooms. Norwegian Epic has the most studio cabins at sea, 128. Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway both offer 59 studio rooms. The studios are about 100 square feet and include entry to a common area, the Studio Lounge, which sports a bar, television screens and complimentary coffee and snacks.

Royal Caribbean also offers studio cabins, chiefly on its newest ships. Harmony of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship, offers 15 studio interior or ocean-view staterooms that range from 96 to 104 square feet. Anthem of the Seas features 14 studio interior staterooms that measure 101 square feet and have virtual balconies. A slight upgrade scores you 119 square feet in one of a dozen Super Studios. Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas both offer 16 studios and 12 Super Studio Ocean View staterooms with balcony. And you’ll find a handful of single rooms on the older Royal ships.

The recently refurbished ocean liner Queen Mary 2 from Cunard now has 15 ocean-view cabins for solo travelers.
