As noted above, there are dozens of cruise lines out there. At last count, I had sailed with 40 different cruise companies, and I still hadnt hit every major brand despite it being my full-time job for years to test cruise ships.
One thing to understand right off the bat is that the lists of cruise lines that youll find here at TPG and at other travel sites include companies offering an incredible range of experiences.
When you think of a cruise ship, you may think of the giant floating megaresorts operated by the likes of Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line that you see in television advertisements the kind of ships that carry thousands of passengers and have all sorts of gee-whiz amusements on their top decks. But the world of cruising also includes companies that operate far smaller, more intimate vessels that carry just a few dozen to a few hundred people and have a completely different vibe. Theyre more like small boutique hotels that happen to float from place to place.

Silverseas fleet has 10 ships, of which just three are technically medium-sized, with passenger counts around 600 peoplebut thats considered quite a large number for the luxurious cruise line, which specializes in smaller expedition vessels. Cruising just got a bit bigger: Royal Caribbean has welcomed its newest and largest ship, the Wonder of the Seas.
Royal Caribbean began constructing the Wonder of the Seas, now the world’s largest cruise ship, in France in 2019.
The 210-foot wide behemoth is the cruise line’s newest “Oasis” class ship, Royal Caribbean’s segment of the “world’s largest cruise ships,” according to the cruise line.
All of this space can accommodate nearly 6,990 guests and 2,300 crew across its 18 decks.
If you’ve been waiting three years to sail on the giant ship, your patience is about to pay off. The Wonder of the Seas will begin operating five to seven-night cruises from Fort Lauderdale to the Caribbean from March through April.
In May, the behemoth vessel will head to Europe for summer Mediterranean itineraries.
And in November, it’ll return to the US for more Caribbean cruises from Port Canaveral, Florida.
