Cruise Ships Are Expected To Return This Month In Santa Barbara
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Expect to see cruise ships returning to Santa Barbara this month.
The Harbor Commission and Waterfront Department have supported the new COVID protocols for cruise ships after two years without them.
The last cruise ship came to the area on March 4, 2020, just as the pandemic hit.
The next cruise ship is scheduled for March 16.
The city says the cruise ship schedule for Spring calls for 17 ships to arrive.
It brings a strong economic boost to the waterfront economy through special fees, and to the city overall with thousands of people taking tours and visiting local businesses.
The Santa Barbara City Council will discuss the cruise ship rules going forward at its Tuesday meeting.
Local Currency & Tipping Customs
The official currency used in Santa Barbara and the rest of California is the U.S. Dollar. If you need cash, youll find several ATMs throughout Santa Barbara, especially at local banks. Most businesses in Santa Barbara also take credit cards. Tipping customs are similar to what you find in the rest of the United States, with 15% to 20% of the total bill being a common tip amount to leave for restaurant services, taxi rides, and bar service. In the U.S., its also common to see tipping jars at eateries and coffee shops where you order at the counter, and leaving change or a dollar bill or two is appreciated.
Arriving By Cruise Ship
Santa Barbara is the ideal port of call for cruise ships due to its manageable size and walkability. Those arriving by cruise ship dock 1.5 miles offshore from the Santa Barbara Harbor. Passengers are then taken ashore to the Sea Landing, where they are greeted by Santa Barbaras Hospitality Team a friendly, knowledgeable group ready to answer your questions and point you in the right direction. Hospitality tents are located along Cabrillo Boulevard, and across from Bath Street.
From here, the exploration begins. Walk to the Harbor or Stearns Wharffor restaurants, museums, and souvenir shops. Or wander along the Urban Wine Trail a unique series of 20+ wine tasting rooms just steps from each other. Take the MTD Downtown Waterfront Shuttle along the coastal Cabrillo Boulevard and then up Santa Barbaras notable State Street.
For those who love to cruise, your stop in Santa Barbara is sure to enhance your love of the sea, and leave you craving another visit to our shores.

Several Cruise Lines Affected
Multiple cruise lines had cruises scheduled to Santa Barbara in the upcoming period. Holland America Line has the Zuiderdam and the Koningsdam scheduled for visits in October. Other cruise lines that have been affected are Princess Cruises and Celebrity Cruises.
The first Royal Caribbean ship that is scheduled to call in the port is Radiance of the Seas, a call that looks to go ahead in the spring of 2022.
For now, not many ports have decided amongst themselves to ban cruise ships from entering. And while Santa Barbara is not the busiest cruise port in the world by any measure, it is a sign of the negative connotations that still linger around cruise ships since the issues seen last year. Multiple outbreaks painted a grim picture of an industry struggling to battle an enemy that later brought the entire world to a standstill.
Port Of Santa Barbara Cancels All Cruise Ship Calls Until 2022
— The California port of Santa Barbara has announced it will cancel all cruise ship visits for this fall, affecting Pacific coastal and California coastal itineraries onboard Celebrity Cruises, Holland America Line and Princess Cruises.
“Due to local increased COVID infection rates, the Santa Barbara Waterfront Department will be continuing the suspension of all cruise ship visits to Santa Barbara, until March 1, 2022,” statement on the city’s website read. “This will provide time to see how the impacts from COVID unfold, as well as work with the industry and stakeholders to determine the right time to reinstate this program safely.
“The next cruise ship on the schedule after the suspension is March 10, 2022.”
Calls aboard those two vessels, along with Nieuw Amsterdam, Koningsdam, Celebrity Millennium and Ruby Princess, have also been canceled through the end of the year by the Santa Barbara Waterfront Department.
The port has been a popular addition in recent years on California coastal cruises that typically run during the shoulder months, acting as a bridge between the Alaska cruise season and the start of the Mexican Riviera and Hawaii cruise seasons that take over in the winter months.

Protect The Health Of The Community
According to city officials, the move to ban cruise ships from the city for the coming six months has been taken following the recent outbreak of COVID-19 amongst the fully vaccinated crew of Carnival Vista, which was linked to the death of one of the passengers.
Cruise ships bring in millions of dollars to the local economy and generally have a low impact on the city as guests use tenders to come to the town center. Nonetheless, the city believes it is not ready for resuming cruise operations just yet, saying it wants to protect the health and safety of our community.
Waterfront Director Mike Wiltshire said the decision was not taken lightly:
Our cruise ship program brings millions of dollars to the local economy as well as introduces Santa Barbara to tens of thousands of people from around the world. It is a well-run program that strategically minimizes impacts by scheduling visits only during the shoulder seasons and often mid-week. That being said, the health and safety of our community, as well as the health and safety of cruise ship passengers visiting our area are our top priority so we have decided to pause the program. We remain optimistic that once were back to pre-pandemic status, Santa Barbara will return as a premier destination for the cruise line industry,
