The Ship You Could Call Home

The operators of MS Satoshi, a 30-year-old cruise ship once known as P& Os Pacific Dawn, have shifted focus from trying to sell cruise condos to offering short- and long-term rentals for tourists once the ship arrives at a permanent anchorage about 30 minutes offshore from Panama City.

The 804-foot, 12-deck vessel is currently en route to Panama from Greece, with a scheduled drydock stop in Gibraltar. Company officials say the MS Satoshi has been repainted and renovated in preparation for its new role.

The ships anchorage will be a five-minute boat ride from popular tourist destination Taboga Island, and shuttles will be offered to ferry guests from the ship to the islands restaurants and beaches.

The ship was acquired earlier this year for an undisclosed price by a company named Ocean Builders. Chief Operating Officer Chad Elwartowski is a Michigan-born software engineer turned bitcoin trader who has been both a proponent of and controversial figure within the seasteading movement.

The original plan was to sell both living and retail space on board in an effort to create a self-sustaining community. The 777 staterooms were to be auctioned off in blocks of 100, but the Ocean Builders website indicates that only about 10 of the first available collection wound up selling by the time the first round of bidding had closed on November 28.

New Residential Cruise Ship Aims For Much Lower Price Point

PublishedOct 23, 2019 5:03 PM byPaul Benecki

A Florida-based startup is looking to enter the rarified world of residential cruise ships, bringing costs down and making the dream accessible to a broader segment of the public.

The residence-at-sea business model is similar to a condominium, with passenger-owners paying up front to purchase a cabin . The only current example of a full-scale residential cruise ship is The World, which has been carrying its owners and their guests since 2002. The price for the 165 residences aboard The World is in the high-six to mid-seven figures , and prospective owners have to prove that they have a net worth of at least $5 million.

A recent entrant to the market, Storylines, would like to make the residential cruise ship concept accessible to a larger number of cruisers. Its business plan calls for introductory pricing just below $300,000, well within the range of condominium projects on shore. Monthly passenger assessments would start at $2,150, comparable to onshore living costs in many major cities.

According to the firm, it will build a new hull in China and launch operations by 2023. If owners want to start their residential lifestyle before then, the firm says that it expects to charter a vessel for future residents so that they can get under way early.

What About Paying Taxes

Spending your retirement on the high seas may lighten your budget load, but you still have to plan for taxes and insurance.

As a U.S. citizen, your income is still taxable, even if youre at sea the majority of the time, Tetreault says. That includes both federal income tax and state income tax if that applies to the state of your primary residence.

If youre receiving Social Security, some or all of that income may be taxable if you also have earned income. Working a regular job while living aboard a cruise ship probably isnt likely, but you might be making money from an online business.

Even if you dont have earned income in retirement, you may be drawing income from your tax-advantaged or taxable investment accounts. Distributions from a traditional 401 or IRA would be subject to ordinary income tax, while earnings from investments in a brokerage account would be subject to capital gains tax. Living on a cruise ship wouldnt change your responsibility to file a tax return. Not filing at all could result in some steep tax penalties.

Cunard Line and Crystal Cruises luxury suites revealed in photos ...

Where once there were only luxurious yachts or mass-market cruise ships to choose from, today theres a third category for those yearning to spend more time at sea. Private residence boats and single-cabin charter vessels are becoming big business, but can these hybrids compare to the real deal?

It took me less than 72 hours to decide to buy our two-bedroom home, says Trevor Rowe, who bought his property on board The World back in 2012. Having owned a series of game fishing boats and motor yachts over a period of 30 years, the largest private residential ship on the planet seemed like the perfect option to combine his passion for exploration with worry-free studboating. Aside from the expense of retaining a crew year-round, even when a yacht is not in use, it is reassuring for me to know that everything is taken care of by the management company from crew recruitment and training through to provisioning and destination planning, he explains.

The World

It is now 17 years since the first owners boarded The World and there doesnt seem to be any slowdown in demand for this kind of lifestyle. So much so there is soon to be another major player in the market: 282-metre Njord.

With todays announcement that Vard Shipyard in Norway have secured the contract for the construction of the residential ship Somnio, and the announcement that her apartments are now available for purchase, SYT takes a closer look at the history of residential vessels. With Somnio being described by her team as a yacht liner, claimed by the builders to be the largest yacht in the world, and among the worlds finest superyachts, we also look at residential yachts encroachment on the superyacht industry, and whether designs by famous industry veterans can account for the claim of their inclusion in the superyacht canon. Somnio is the first vessel of her kind, in reality a residential cruise ship, that echoes the lines of vessels from the superyacht industry. With the British firm Winch Design creating her interior and exterior, together with Tillberg Design of Sweden, cruise and luxury yacht designers being commissioned for her design, the vessel has something of a superyacht pedigree. However, at 222-metres and 33,500 GT with 39 unique apartments, she cannot be considered a yacht within the parameters of the superyacht industry. Apartments aboard Somnio are offered by invitation only, and with prices for apartments upward of $8,000,000, life aboard this ship is considerably more expensive than her cruise-ship counterparts.

World Cruise Ship: Dream Or Reality

It does sound great: a life of world travel, while still getting to go home at night. However, having to dress in your best for every meal in order to ‘keep up with the Jones’ could be quite tiring.

I do enjoy my stays in humble hostels or bed and breakfasts, with guests eager to share their cost-saving tips and share taxi rides to the nearest train station. I would much prefer to schmooze over a home-cooked meal than a fancy gourmet dinner each night, and not have to worry if my clothes are fashionable enough.

People Are Buying Second Homes On Cruise Ships For Less Than $50000

DAILY LIFE ONBOARD A NORTH POLE CRUISE

August 11, 2015 by www.businessinsider.com.au

For anyone who has ever struggled with the idea of spending their savings buying a home or using it all to travel the world, condo cruises present a perfect solution.

These floating communities are increasingly popular modes of fulfilling travel fantasies without having to leave the comforts of home. Plus, every home is oceanfront.

The World, a luxury ocean liner, calls itself a residential yacht and is the most famous ocean residence, as well as the largest and oldest, having set sail in 2002. And, according to our research, it seems to be the only active one right now.

However, the idea of a permanent home at sea seems to be picking up.

The World will soon be joined by The Utopia, a 200-unit condo cruise ship that will be almost twice the size of The World, built to the tune of around $US1.1 billion and set to launch next year, as well as The Marquette, which will have 185 residences navigating 5,500 miles of rivers and 1,100 miles of Intracoastal Waterways in the US year-round.

The Marquette is currently 42% presold and expects to launch in 18 months. Its apartments range in cost from $US327k to $US1.2 million.

Just last week, Crystal Cruises announcedthree new cruise ships that will have up to 48 private residences for sale, ranging in size from 600 square feet to a whopping to 4,000.

The only alternative to this kind of lifestyle is buying a yacht, which makes buying a condo on a cruise ship look like a steal.

Original Concept And Construction

So There Is a Cruise Ship Where Residents Permanently Live as It ...

The ship was the idea of Knut Kloster, whose family had a long history in the marine industry. The hull was built in Landskrona, Sweden, by Öresundsvarvet, and it was then towed to Fosen Mekaniske Verksted in Rissa, Norway, for completion. The vessel was launched in March 2002 and purchased by its residents in October 2003.

The management company is responsible for operations and administration of the ship, including hiring the employees. The residents, through their elected board of directors and a network of committees, provide guidance to the management about the ships itinerary, finances, and lifestyle.

Is It Cheaper To Live On A Ship Than Rent An Apartment

World Famous Ganesha Dharshan,? ??,?|China,Bali,USA,Thailand Idols|Khairathabad?

Would you like to live on a cruise ship?

I’ve been reading about some interesting research on website cruisedeals.co.uk, which claims it’s cheaper to live day to day on a cruise ship than to rent an apartment in London.

According the Cruise Deals’ detailed calculations, it costs $5279.26 a month to live in London, figuring in average costs for rent, food, local transport and entertainment.

At the same time, a 120-day round-the-world cruise on the Arcadia, including stops in Barbados, Los Angeles and Bora Bora, costs $20775.49, working out at $162.78 per day, cheaper than the per-day price to live in London.

Residents of Australia’s cities, especially Sydney and Melbourne, might want to take note $5278.91 a month sounds cheap, compared to what some in Sydney dish out for essentials.

In any case, it’s further reason why grey nomads might be tempted to pull up stumps and spend their lives all at sea. Imagine how varied and stimulating life would be if you were constantly in different ports, visiting different cultures and never having to pack and unpack.
