Cruises Set To Return To Port Of Charleston Carnival Sunshine Under Investigation For Possible Covid

FILE | Carnival Sunshine is docked in Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. A cruise ship based out of Charleston is currently under investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for possibly having COVID-19 cases.

Carnival Sunshine, operated by Carnival Cruise Lines, Inc., was scheduled to return to sailing out of the Port of Charleston beginning January 13th one of the companys 17 ships slated to begin voyages in the new year.

The ship, however, is operating under a restricted status. The CDC this week updated its ship color status to Yellow, which means there have been reported cases of COVID-19 on the vessel and meets its threshold for investigation.

The CDC says any cases reported in the 0.10% or more of passengers would require an investigation. For example, if there are 6,500 passengers on the ship, seven or more cases would require investigation by the health agency or one of more cases reported in its crew.

Its unclear how many people or crew are currently aboard the ship while it operates in restricted status.

Nearly two years since a cruise ship made Charleston a port of call, Norwegians Gem a more than 2,000 passenger ship docked at the port authoritys Union Pier Terminal on December 21st and again on the 28th.

Carnival Sunshine is expected to arrive without passengers at the port on January 11th where it will prepare for return voyages to the Bahamas and the Eastern Caribbean.

International Cruise Ship Terminal Planned For Savannah

Charleston cruises. Every cruise leaving from this ...

August 26, 2000 | Staff

Chatham County officials are overseeing a plan to build an international cruise ship terminal on the Savannah River near downtown Savannah, said John Snedeker, chair of the Chatham County Port Planning Committee.

The terminal that is to be built on private land and could include a hotel, offices, restaurants and shops, is estimated to be a $250-300 million project, Mr. Snedeker told GlobalFax in a telephone interview. He added that the landowner is willing to sell and several companies are interested in investing in the project, although no deals have yet been made.

Cruise ships carrying between 1,100-2,200 passengers would begin their tours from Savannah, which means that people from all over the country and the world would gain exposure to Georgia, he said.

They would fly into Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport, take a flight to Savannah where they would stay overnight, probably eat at the restaurants and go shopping, and in the morning depart from the terminal, he said. The ripple effect would be tremendous.

Mr. Snedeker, who is a maritime shipping consultant, said that likely destinations for the ships would be Bermuda, the northern Bahamas and, on longer cruises, Mexico and Central America. Several cruise companies, including Carnival Cruise Lines, Commodore Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, have expressed interest in using the terminal.
