Cruise Ships Will Begin Returning To San Diego This Week Without Passengers

Monday, December 21, 2020

Cruise ships are scheduled to return to the Port of San Diego this week and through the new year, as part of an effort by the cruise lines to reestablish ships in U.S. waters as a prerequisite to resume cruising in a post-COVID-19 world, it was announced Monday.

Five Holland America Line ships and one Princess Cruises ship are scheduled to arrive beginning Wednesday, periodically docking at the B Street Cruise Terminal for fuel, food, supplies and services. At this time, none of the vessels will be carrying passengers or conducting any sailings, according to local port officials.

To resume cruises after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention deems it safe in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the ships must reestablish operations in United States waters to meet CDC and U.S. Coast Guard guidelines.

According to port officials, time spent docked in San Diego will be limited. Each ship is scheduled to dock at B Street the morning of their scheduled arrival date and depart that evening.

Best Attractions Near The Cruise Port In San Diego

BY Katie DillonSan Diego Local Expert

Do plan time before or after your cruise to explore San Diego. The B Street Terminal Cruise Port enjoys a prime downtown San Diego location, a short distance away from Little Italy, the Gaslamp Quarter and even the Point Loma neighborhood. Translation: Take advantage of the fact you’ll already be in the thick of things.

Attractions on this list include a few tours that can give cruisers without the luxury of several days in San Diego a quick overview of the city. While Another Side of San Diego can arrange basically anything you’d like from Segways to helicopter tours, hopping on and off the signature orange Old Town Trolley is easy, because it stops in front of the Maritime Museum, also a must-see. The trolley tours are a hop on and hop off situation, taking guests to Old Town or even as far north as scenic La Jolla.

Or, hop on a SEAL Tour. The funky, amphibious bus-boats start on land, touring a number of San Diego’s photo-worthy sights and end up in the San Diego Bay where guests enjoy almost eye-level photos with wildlife, including seals and sea lions.

Whether your stay in San Diego is long or just a few hours, an attraction or two on this list will keep you happily occupied.

Do You Need A Passport For Cruises From San Diego

Yes … and no. Customs and Border Control / Immigration officers coming back to the United States may not always require US Citizens to have a passport when traveling to Mexico or Canada. However, your cruise line will almost always require it. If you do not have a passport though, other documentation is generally required which can be complicated and time consuming or even disruptive if something happens where you need to leave the cruise ship for some reason.

Additionally, while a US Passport Card or even the Secure ID Drivers License cards are great for getting back into the United States at land crossings, we strongly recommend bringing your Passport Book to avoid any issues.

Cruise Ships To Return To San Diego This Fall

Holland America Lines Koningsdam ship arrives at the Port of San Diegos B Street Terminal on Wednesday, May 19, 2021 so dozens of its crew members can get their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

The full reopening of San Diego County means the return of many things locals and visitors like to do, including hopping on a cruise ship for a vacation out of the Port of San Diego.

On Monday, Holland America Line alongside San Diegos Board of Port Commissioners and city and tourism leaders announced its plans to bring cruising back to San Diego this fall.

And, they’re not the only ones. Port of San Diego Chairman Michael Zucchet says the calendar for the fall season is already filling up with names like the Disney Cruise Line and Carnival joining the list.

“We expect to have anywhere from 70 to 80 cruise calls starting in September or October for the season, which is obviously down from pre-COVID levels but thats a fairly healthy come back,” Zucchet says.

The return of the lines cruises will have a big impact on the local economy, which was estimated to have lost $282 million since last March due to canceled cruises.

The Port of San Diego said each ship that docks locally contributes $300,000 to the local economy in provisioning, port taxes, and spending. Holland America Line works with more than 35 local vendors who supply the company and its ships with goods and services.
