Did You Miss It Don’t Worry There Are Many Chances To See This In 2019

It’s shaping up to be a;busy spring and summer at Port Canaveral, as the port on Monday Memorial Day hosted six cruise ships for the first of nine times in 2019.

Having six cruise ships in port at the same day has happened only twice before in Port Canaveral’s 65-year history in February and March 2015.

What was different this time around is that Port Canaveral had to use what usually is a cargo terminal North Cargo Berth 5 to accommodate one of the ships, since the former Cruise Terminal 3 is torn down, and the new Cruise Terminal 3 is under construction.

Steve Linden, the port’s director of communications and public affairs, said more than 33,000 passengers got on or off the six ships on Monday.

That figure exceeds the population of Cocoa and Cocoa Beach combined.

At the port on Monday were;Carnival Cruise Line’s Elation and Liberty;;Disney Cruise Line’s Dream; Norwegian Cruise Line’s Dawn and Sun; and Royal Caribbean International’s Mariner of the Seas.

The Norwegian Dawn was making a port-of-call stop at Port Canaveral, while the other five ships are based there. The Dawn was able to use the cargo berth, since there are less logistical issues with a port-of-call ship, involving such things as baggage, ticketing and customs.

Booming Growth In The Size Of Ships

Lets start with some idea of how much larger ships have become.

Gone are the days where a cruise ship was designed simply to be the vessel to get you from port to port. Today, the cruise ship is the destination.

For years theres been an arms race when it comes to new ships. The major cruise lines have competed to create ships that not only push their own fleets bigger, but also put them on par with their rivals.

Thats continually led larger cruise ships, with a steady increase in average size over time.

Consider that from 1990 until 2000, most new cruise ships built were in the 70,000-80,000 gross ton range. Since then, the size of ships has soared.

From 2015 until 2020, the average gross tonnage of a new cruise ship from the major cruise lines was 164,000 gross tons more than twice the size of a ship built during the 1990s.

So why do cruise ships continue to get larger? For cruise companies and passengers, there are a number of benefits to larger cruise ships.

Sailing Out Of The Port Canaveral On Disney Cruise Line

Admittedly, Ive only sailed Disney Cruise Line from Port Canaveral, and Ive always found the process to be easy and straightforward. If you are taking Disney transportation from the airport, youll leave your luggage before boarding the motorcoach at the airport.

Once you arrive at the port, youll be directed through security, then will travel upstairs to the check-in area. The Disney terminal is so well-appointed, and it really gets you in the spirit of traveling with Disney.

There are three separate check-in areas. One is for first-time cruisers, one is for Castaway Club silver and gold members, and one is for concierge guests and Platinum Castaway Club members.

When you check-in, youll make sure you have a credit card on file, sign any relevant paperwork, and have your photo taken. Youll be given a Key to the World card, as well as a lanyard if you are a Castaway Club member.

A boarding number will be given to you at that time. You can sit in the waiting area and wait for the number to be called. While you wait, you can walk outside to get a great photo of the ship, and can even wait in line to take a photo with Minnie or Mickey.

Bringing this newer ship with recent enhancements is part of the cruise lines strategy of revamped ships offering short cruises alongside the Oasis-class vessels at all three major Florida ports.

Cdc Gives Carnival Ok For Test Cruises From Port Canaveral Miami Galveston

ORLANDO The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention opened the door for cruises to begin again for Carnival Cruise Line out of Port Canaveral, Miami and Galveston.

The cruise line announced the decision Friday that will allow it to sail ships from the three ports on test sailings with volunteer passengers to prove out COVID-19 safety protocols.

These agreements move us one step closer to sailing with our loyal guests, said Lars Ljoen, executive vice president and chief maritime officer for Carnival Cruise Line in a press release. We appreciate the support from not just these three homeport partners, but all of our homeports, that are eager to have us back as soon as possible.

While the cruise line had previously announced its intentions to sail two ships, Carnival Vista and Carnival Breeze, from Galveston and one ship, Carnival Horizon, from PortMiami, it has yet to announce which of its ships it intends to first use from the Space Coast port.

This is the exciting news that we have been waiting for, stated Port Canaveral CEO Capt. John Murray. A tremendous amount of cooperative effort went into these agreements as we worked closely with our partner Carnival Cruise Line. This is a monumental step to getting the cruise industry up and running once again.

Guidance on how sailing would be able to return has only come in the last month.
