Cruise Ships In Glacier Bay

A cruise ship dwarfed by the mountains of Glacier Bay

Most visitors to Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve spend a day in Glacier Bay on large cruise ships as part of a longer cruise originating at a major west coast city. It is an amazing day cruising through the best of Alaska. The spectacular scenery and wildlife of Glacier Bay make it a highlight of any Alaska cruise. The ship travels into the heart of the Fairweather Mountains for a trip into the ice ages. Watch for icebergs and calving glaciers. Scan the shorelines for wildlife…brown bears, mountain goats, sea otters, sea lions, harbor seals, bald eagles, and a variety of seabirds are regularly seen.

What to Expect

  • You will receive a copy of the park map/guide in your stateroom the evening before your arrival in Glacier Bay.
  • Cruise ships typically spend a full day in Glacier Bay including a stop at a major tidewater glacier.
  • National Park Service park rangers board the ship to provide a narrative about important aspects of the visit, give special presentations about the park, kid’s activities, staff an information desk, and answer all of your questions.
  • Note: Cruise ships do not dock anywhere in Glacier Bay National Park.
  • Check out our Glacier Bay cruise ship visitor “insider’s guide” to learn more and get the most out of your park visit.

Why Is Glacier Bay Famous

Glacier Bay is a globally significant marine and terrestrial wilderness sanctuary. A place that offers human solitude and a remote wildness that is rapidly disappearing in todays world. A place of hopefor the continued wisdom, restraint, and humility to preserve a sample of wild America, the world as it was.

Haines Best Weather And Kayaking

Haines doesnt have a lot of cruise ships that call in its port, but it does have some. You can also visit Haines by taking a shore excursion when your ship calls in nearby Skagway. However you get there, Haines is worth a visit for plenty of reasons.

In addition to the scenery that every Alaska town has on offer, Haines is positioned to have the best weather in Southeast Alaska, making it ideal for outdoor activities like kayaking! When I say best weather I mean less rain than most other ports but it doesnt have the wind that Skagway has. In any part of Southeast Alaska you need to be ready for rain, any day, all year, but Haines gives you a better chance of a dry day than most.

Kayaking is unique in Haines because you can take a tour for sea kayaking or you can kayak in Chilkoot Lake, giving options for every preference and every skill level in a kayak. This is a wonderful place to try kayaking for the first time!

Ranger Program Educating Visitors Flourishes Aboard Cruise Ships In Glacier Bay National Park

Glacier Bay Cruise

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Glacier Bays arm of the National Park Service is taking class to visiting cruise ships with its own kind of school out at sea. Each week when cruise ships are running in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, a group of rangers packs up and hits the water, taking its talents to the thousands of visitors coming through.

Were essentially park storytellers, said Ingrid Nixon, chief of interpretation for Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. Were the ones that do the walks and talks, we talk to visitors, and help them understand this place so they can help protect this place.

In the wee hours of the morning on days when cruise ships are coming through Glacier Bay a small NPS crew will gather at a parking dock to load up The Serac, a transfer boat dedicated to getting rangers on big cruise ships. The team then heads way out into the bay to board the visiting ships and meet the many awaiting passengers.

Since they dont come to us, we go to them, Nixon said. The fact that we put rangers on cruise ships, this is the most unique interpretive program in the national parks. There is no other program like this.

From the transfer boat, the team takes thousands of tourists on an educational journey, answering questions, sharing history, guiding visitors through the sights of the park and spotting wildlife with them.

Its all in an effort to shine a spotlight on the wonders of the national park.

Hubbard Glacier Vs Glacier Bay

Hubbard Glacier, Alaska

Hubbard Glacier is the longest tidewater glacier in North America. Roughly 76 miles long and as tall as a 30-story building, Hubbard Glacier is as large as the state of Rhode Island and is the biggest glacier you can see from a cruise ship.

Hubbard Glacier also has the distinction of being one of the most active glaciers in Alaska. Known as the Galloping Glacier, Hubbard is quickly advancing towards the Gulf of Alaska at a rate of about 80 feet per year.

Calving of Hubbard Glacier, Alaska

Its fast movement leads to large sections of ice breaking off and falling into the sea occurring about every fifteen minutes or so. If you cruise to Hubbard Glacier, you can rest assured youll witness the spectacular scene of a multi-story chunk of ice falling into the ocean during your vacation.

The journey to Hubbard Glacier is also a unique trip on its own, since sailing through Disenchantment Bay towards the glacier includes views of five of the ten tallest mountain peaks in North America. These are magnificent backdrops you wont be able to see anywhere else.

Humpback whale in Alaska

In Glacier Bay National Park, you can spot marine wildlife, floating icebergs, and eight large glaciers. However, since more than 60 miles of ice have already melted in Glacier Bay, most of the glaciers there are considered hanging glaciers, which means they have receded back into the mountains and there is now a much smaller chance of them calving.

Glacier Bay Stop Or Not Cruise From Seattle

I’m planning a Seattle round trip cruise, the price for a route stopping at Glacier Bay is 25% higher than those without the stop. Hope experts here can explain the reason for the big price difference. Thanks in advance!

Just to clarify, you will not actually dock in Glacier Bay, just cruise through it and yes I think it would be a highlight and worth paying for, as well……there are only a few cruise ships a day that are allowed into Glacier Bay……

As mombear said, only two ships are permitted into Glacier Bay National Park each day, and from Seattle only Norwegian Pearl, Crown Princess and HAL Westerdam have permits. I also agree that the cost may be more due to that factor, but not necessarily so.

Frommy – in addition all Princess ships that do the one way trips between Vancouver and Whittier visit Glacier Bay, that being the Grand, Pacific, and Coral. And, the Pacific Princess is one of their smaller ships

k2iks,

I know that, and there are also several other ships besides Princess on the one-way runs that similarly include GBNP, but the question being asked was for a round trip

Without knowing which cruises you are looking at either the Glacier Bay or Tracy Arms Glacier cruise would be a highlight. Its a great way to see one of the major features of the Alaskan geography in the inland passageway area. Do try to select a cruise that includes either one of these – i.e. you might find a cruise that does Tracy Arms that may cost a bit less.

Do Carnival Northbound Cruises Stop In Glacier Bay

I love visiting national parks, but feel a little guilty that the closest I’ll get to Glacier Bay NP next week is on a giantcruise ship.

Does anyone know of the Northbound Carnival cruise ships get to cruise the Bay? I know there is a special Carnival Glacier Bay cruise, but that is different from the Northbound that I’ll be on next week .

I hear that National Park rangers get on many of the ships and talk about the Bay, so I hope this will happen on our ship. Does anyone know how to find out if it will?

Thanks!

Big Ship Or Small Ship

One of the first things youll need to decide when looking at itineraries and best Alaska cruise ports is whether you are going to travel on a big ship or a small ship. This question is worth considering because they are very different experiences. Your budget is an important first consideration as small ship cruises are generally about triple the cost of big ship cruising. This varies based on the length of the trip and the choices you make as well as the specific cruise company you plan to travel with.

Best Time To Cruise Glacier Bay National Park

The best time to visit Glacier Bay National Park is summer, when the temperatures are slightly warmer, humpback whales return to the area after the winter, and seal pups float on blocks of ice. Summer is also when you may be lucky and glimpse the spectacular Northern Lights.

Are Alaska Cruises Rough

Rough Waters: The majority of sailing on an Alaska cruise is done in the protected waters of the Inside Passage, but ships sailing to Seward, Whittier or Anchorage must cross the Gulf of Alaska, which is much rougher. Cruise staffers say the gulf gets especially bad after Labor Day, in the shoulder season.

What About The Ferry

You might have heard someone refer to the Alaska ferry as a locals cruise or a cheaper cruise and I want you to know that is not accurate! I cringe whenever I read or hear this. The Alaska ferry is absolutely wonderful, but its public transportation and that is how its used by Alaskans. Its also more expensive than people expect and there are lots of hidden costs, such as getting a small cabin and eating in the cafeteria. If youre interested in taking the ferry to or within Alaska, its an amazing experience, but its very different from a cruise! Learn more in my complete guide to riding the Alaska ferry here.

Who Discovered Glacier Bay

Glacier Bay was first surveyed in 1794 by a team from the H.M.S. Discovery, captained by George Vancouver. At that time, the survey showed a mere indentation in the shoreline. Haleakala National Park In Hawaii

Cruise ship near Lamplugh Glacier, Glacier Bay National Pa ...

This 52-square-mile national park on the Hawaiian island of Maui encompasses the islands soaring Haleakala volcano and is one of the top attractions for cruisers arriving at the island. For around $130 to $160 per adult, cruisers can sign up for a 4- to 6-hour tour to its 10,023-foot summit to see the lunar-like landscape. Unlike the volcanoes at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Haleakala isnt active. But its still a stunning sight.

The typical tour for cruisers to Haleakala takes place midday, but some lines offer early and late outings timed to get you there for sunrise or sunset. Other tours take you up the volcano road for a ride down on a bike. Just be prepared for a bit of a drive to get to the summit of the volcano. It can be a 2-hour trip from sea level. And bring a jacket. It can be 30 degrees cooler at the top.

The summit of the volcano offers panoramic views to other Hawaiian islands, a visitors center with exhibits about the native flora and fauna, an easy walk to an overlook and hiking trails that will let you crunch your way across the cinder desert landscape.

Who goes there: Norwegian is the dominant player for cruises to Maui, too. Its weekly Hawaii voyages out of Honolulu include two full days at the Maui port of Kahului.

Princess, Holland America, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Celebrity, Regent and Oceania also offer Hawaii cruises with stops either at Kahului or Lahaina, but far less frequently than Norwegian.
