Actually, they dont always circumnavigate the globe. Instead, many will sail port-intensive itineraries visiting one or a few continents conversely, they may visit all of them but not in the linear fashion you might expect. On Legends of Cruising, on Silversea Cruises’ Silver Whisper, sailing 140 days departing January 6, 2020, passengers set foot on all seven continentsbut they’ll route from Ft. Pre Or Post Cruise Hotel Stays

Dont forget to budget for a hotel stay before your cruise, or even after. It can cost about $200 a night or more for a one night hotel stay in a major city, so this adds to the cost of your cruise.

Whether you cruise out of South Florida and want to stay and visit Miami, or you want to visit Rome before your Mediterranean cruise, its worth it!

To reduce the cost of hotels, consider using hotel aggregator or discount websites like Priceline and Hotwire. For longer stays, consider an AirBnb for great values.

Optional Expenses On A Cruise Vacation

The following expenses are optional, and whether you spend on these extras or not really depends on what youll enjoy.

That said, cruise lines make a lot of money from cruise passengers who do spend on these things on a cruise. Despite cruise linespushing specialty dining and other pay to play activities, there is a lot available and included on a cruise.

Dont feel pressured to blow your budget instead first check what is included and available, and pay extra only for what really matters to you.

Our Cheap World Cruise Itinerary & Travel Stats:

This westward trip across Canada was actually the beginning stages of our journey entirely around the world without flights.

At the time, it was all just a rough sketch of varying ideas and possibilities. But this cheap world cruise would ultimately take us to:

  • 22 countries,
  • visiting 35 Unesco World Heritage Sites,
  • sleeping in 74 beds, and
  • through over 100 different cities in the world!

The trip from Halifax completely around the globe and back took exactly 300 days, all without using a single flight.

Instead, we moved around the world using:

71 trains, 11 ferries + 1 river cruise, 7 rental cars, 6 long-distance taxis, and 4 ocean cruise ships that carried us around the world for a total of 2½ months!

Yet much more remarkable than our forms of transportation or where we slept each night, was the vast amount of amazing travel experiences we were so fortunate to have during this grand adventure around the world.

Highlights during the 10-month trip around the world included:

^Phew, and thats just the highlight reel. It was truly a trip of a lifetime.

So How Much Did It Cost To Take This Cheap World Cruise

Here, were going into the deep details to fully break down the cost of our entire trip around the world. This trip budget includes all four cruises that we took, in addition to detailing the expenses of our stints traveling overland across the worlds most expensive nations.

We feel a bit naked revealing our personal finances and spending habits. But we are doing this because we want to show exactly how it is possible to actually afford a trip of this caliber.

Heres how we broke it all down. Our travel expenses during the ten-month journey can be grouped into four large categories of costs:

  • Accommodation
  • Transportation
  • The cruises themselves

Before drilling down into our detailed financial data, its worthwhile to take a second to understand some accounting challenges we faced when tracking our travel expenses.

It was tricky to categorize because many of these groupings often overlap. For example, we regularly seek out accommodation that includes breakfast and are willing to pay a bit more for that. We even stayed at some business hotels in Japan that further included complimentary curry rice for dinner . In such instances, we only allocated the expense to accommodation, even though the price we paid for the hotel covered two breakfasts and two dinners.

One Note About Cruising In 2022

Of course the world has changed since the health crisis. Nowhere is that more the case than with cruising. The entire industry was shut down for almost all of 2020 and slowly made its return in 2021.

But there have been big changes to cruise lines. Of course, health and safety measures have been introduced, but there are bigger changes that could impact the cost of a cruise.

Longer-Term PricingDuring the stop, the major cruise companies took on massive amounts of debt to survive. Now as cruising resumes, expect them to be focused on improving their balance sheets. That could involve higher pricing, if the market allows. Cruise lines have said repeatedly that demand is strong in later parts of 2022 and onboard spending is at considerably higher levels than before the pause.

As well, several cruise lines sold off a number older, smaller ships. In general, older ships offer lower pricing. Along with the removal of older ships, this also reduces the capacity of cabins available. If demand returns, that could mean higher cruise prices in the future.

Short-Term PricingFor early 2022, however, there are signs of slower demand for travel as the world continues to battle the health crisis. Thats why if youre able to sail in the first few months of the year, were seeing some very attractive prices. If you are fully vaccinated, the first part of 2022 seems to be an affordable time to sail.

Frequently Asked Questions About World Voyages

This Around

A World Voyage is one that calls at several continents, offering guests the opportunity to explore at a variety of ports in a wealth of countries. Our World Voyages can be experienced in their entirety, but are also sold in smaller “sectors”, so you can choose a voyage that can span either weeks or months at a time.

Some incredible destinations to visit on a World Cruise include the Norwegian Fjords, New Zealand’s Fiordland, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, The Whitsunday Islands, Jordan in Petra, the Caribbean and South-East Asia. Check our World Voyage itineraries for more exciting destinations.

You could be at sea for weeks or months at a time on a World Cruise, so it’s vital to pack a variety of clothing options for both good and bad weather, as well as daytimes exploring and evenings on board. Outfits for formal evenings on your ship are a must, as are a couple of pairs of sturdy and comfortable walking shoes. Swimwear and flip flops will ensure you’re able to make full use of your ship’s pools and spa, plus any beaches you call at on your voyage. A waterproof coat will keep you warm and dry if the weather takes a turn for the worse, while cardigans and shirts are perfect for layering over T-shirts and dresses when you need a lighter cover-up.

Be aware that on top of visas some countries may also require you to have certain vaccinations, so it’s best to look into this also. Seek advice from your travel agent or a doctor if you are unsure.

How We Afforded A Cheap Cruise Entirely Around The World With These Travel Tricks

Is a cheap world cruise actually possible?

Thats the question we asked ourselves.

So we thoroughly investigated this seemingly unlikely potential, as we planned a trip entirely around the world without flights.

Over the past five years of our nonstop travels around the world, we make concerted efforts to pursue and uncover some of the best travel values in the world, while stretching our travel dollars as far as possible.

Its an open secret how traveling through cheaper destinations like Southeast Asia can be easily accomplished on a modest budget of $25 per day, or even less. Its actually quite easy to achieve a high standard of travel at a low cost in many parts of Latin America and Eastern Europe too. Its a proven strategy that has allowed us to travel well without spending a fortune over the course of the past several years.

But we also like getting off the well-worn backpacker trails and going beyond the worlds more economical nomad hotspots. We like to show how even seemingly extravagant travel experiences can be affordable. For example, weve proven how to visit the Galapagos on a Budget, take an African Safari for $50/Day, or even have a Luxury Trip to Egypt on a Budget.

Yet this past year we gave ourselves the biggest budget travel goal wed ever set out on: attempting a cheap around the world cruise.

The terms world cruise and budget travel are two contrasting phrases that dont normally mix. We want to prove that they can!

We did it all.

What A World Cruise Should Include

As any seasoned cruise-goer knows, its important to analyze various packages and itineraries offered by cruise lines. Its too easy to get sucked in by a $499 offer for a 7-night sail in the Caribbean, only to learn the cabin is like a closet, you only get off once, and the ship is 15 years old. Even with a week-long cruise, its virtually impossible to not spend additional money on board if you want to live a little. Were not talking about buying gemstones in the jewelry storethis is more about evening cocktails or fitness classes. Dont fall victim to world-cruise itineraries that nickel and dime you at exponentially higher rates than these shorter cruises.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself to pick the package right for you:

Do you plan to enjoy pre-dinner cocktails every night?

Look for a cruise with a beverage package or note when drinks are included.

Are you a morning cappuccino drinker or is drip coffee alright?

Many cruise lines charge extra for espresso or fancy coffee drinks, while grabbing plain drip coffee through room service or at restaurants costs nothing.

Will you be needing internet access to check in with colleagues and family back home, or be working remotely?

Shop around Wi-Fi packages because it takes many, many days to cross the ocean with few port stops. You can also confirm their reliability by checking out forums on sites like CruiseCritic.com.

Whats Not Included In The Cruise Price

The sheer amount of extras and goodies available to cruise guests can make budgeting in advance difficult, but its worth it. The spontaneity of a splurge may seem harmless enough on the ship, but avoiding the comedown of post-vacation sticker shock is only possible with planning. When youre figuring out how much your cruise costs, be sure to account for the following additional costs.
