Norwegian Cruise Lines DEAL to Asia, India and South Africa | Planet Cruise Deal of the Week

Holland Americaâs intimate yet spacious mid-sized ships let you visit far more ports than the typical contemporary cruise. While youâll make several stops in Africa, some of the highlights include:

Victoria, Seychelles: The island nationâs capital is perfect for shopping and exploring architecture, particularly the old, narrow streets and colonial-style buildings, promenades, and cathedrals. Or to take in nature, stop by the Botanical Garden.

Durban: South Africaâs major eastern port takes travelers to the Kwa-Zulu Natal homeland and the Golden Mile, an area of bronze-sanded beaches juxtaposed with blue waters. During your time in port, explore the areaâs many sights and attractions: flea markets, shops, temples, historical museums, and the Umgeni River Bird Park.

Cape Town: South Africaâs mother city brings together African history with the countryâs English and Dutch influences. Take a cable-car ride, see Cape Dutch buildings, or sign up for a safari.

Walvis Bay: Namibiaâs coastal city and port gets you close to exotic wildlife and the Namib Desert. Depending upon the excursion you take, you may see gemsbok, springbok, ostrich, brown hyenas, cheetahs, or desert elephants.

Arrecife, Canary Islands: This port rakes you to Lanzarote, a World Biosphere reserve. But thatâs not all there is to see. Youâll likely come across fields of melons and grapes and see the islandâs volcanic fields.

Africa Cruises To Morocco

Morocco’s fascinating culture and deep-rooted traditions are present throughout the country. Visit Morocco’s most famous cosmopolitan city, Casablanca, where beaches, clubs, mosques and markets all rub shoulders. Feel like you have literally stepped back in time in the walled city of Taroudant. If you want to dive head first into life in Morocco, head to the Berber market and the Arab Souks where you can pick up some souvenirs of your trip and buy anything from leather to spices, all the while trying out your haggling skills.

When Is A Good Time To Cruise To Africa

Africa is large, and the geography and climates can vary, making it difficult to pinpoint the best time to go. However, the weather is usually warm, and the cruise season there generally runs from October to May, with sailings departing from South Africa seeing the most traffic in December and January.

Dutch, French, Indian and Malaysian meld to create the Afrikaans-style of cooking. Braai or shisa nyama, which means ‘burn the meat,’ is like western BBQ. For a meaty snack, try Biltong. Served in a brown bag, these spiced strips are akin to jerky. Wondering about Slap Chips? Try these vinegar-doused fries alone or in a Gatsby sandwich. Seafood lovers can rejoice too at Mossel Bay, whose name means bay of mussels. Need a ‘dop’ or drink? A favourite is Amarula, a cream liqueur made from the fruit of the Marula tree. Elephants get drunk eating its fermented fruit.

Frequently Asked Questions About Africa & Indian Ocean Cruises

Cape Town, the famous South African city nestled at the foot of Table Mountain, is our first recommendation for this region. Take in the views riding the Flying Dutchman Funicular, or meet native African penguins on Boulders beach.

Our second highlight is Colombo, in Sri Lanka. Explore local history in the Colombo National Museum, try the unique flavors of local curries, or travel outside the city to visit the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara Temple, once visited by the Lord Buddha himself.

Last but not least is Réunion, an island east of Madagascar with a unique French flavor. Sun yourself on perfect beaches and explore lush, green forest on a visit to this ocean oasis.

Temperatures in Africa and around the Indian Ocean tend to be on the higher side, though the region is large and weather can vary depending on where you cruise. Generally, the summer months are best avoided, and cruises tend to operate between September and May when days are cooler and crowds are smaller.

Sun protection and a light waterproof jacket are also advised, as well as comfortable shoes for exploring cities, or more rugged terrain, on foot. Each Cunard Queen is fitted with pools and spa facilities for your enjoyment, so pack swimwear, and formalwear for our glittering Gala Evenings.

Namibia, South Africa, Mauritius, Reunion, United Arab Emirates, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Thailand are all available to visit on a Cunard cruise. Explore further on our Africa & Indian Ocean ports page.

Princess Cruises To Africa

Coronavirus | MSC cruise ship arrives from Mozambique

Out of all cruise markets, Africa is the least untapped. Wildlife, culture ranging from the bustling port of Casablanca all the way down to Cape Town, and thousands of years of history make a cruise experience like no other, and ahead of other contemporary lines, Princess schedules trips providing an extensive view of this continent.

Ships coming from Asia or going north toward Europe explore both sides. On one, vessels stop in the Middle East to travel through the eastern islands, like the Seychelles and Reunion, and then pass through South Africa. On the others, ships enter or depart from Cape Town and then proceed north over the west coast.

In the process, cruisers get a sense of the continentâs varied cultures and history, be it the Zulu homeland in South Africa, major empires in Benin and Senegal, and centuries of North African trade out of Casablanca.

The best time to cruise the southern countries of Africa is in the early months of the year, between January and late March. The continents size means the weather can be variable, but temperatures often remain high, though not unpleasant, throughout this period.
