Handling The Vaccine Debate

Saturday at PortEverglades, passengers were getting used to new rules such as staggered embarkation times that was enforced by port workers. One woman who arrived too early for her check in time had food delivered to the port to eat as she waited.

The passengers who arrived at the correct time found the process smooth. Passports and vaccine cards were presented to be scanned port workers asked specifically for verification that your card was the original and not a copy or forged. This is in addition to a procedural email that went out before boarding, reminding guests that falsification of vaccination records is a federal crime subject to prosecution.

While the state of Florida has banned vaccine passports, the line is allowed to ask people if they want to show it voluntarily, Celebrity Cruises President Lisa Lutoff-Perlo has said.

Passengers who decline to show their cards are considered unvaccinated and go through a more thorough testing regimen, at their own expense. They must present proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within 3 days before the cruise, take an antigen test before boarding, a test mid-cruise and finally a test to get back into the United States.

Vaccinated passengers need only take that final test. Celebrity Cruises picks up the tab for that test for those guests, while the ones who are unvaccinated must pay $178 for each one. Children under 16 are exempt from these costs until the end of July, with that age dropping to 12 on August 1.

There Are Consequences For Those Who Opt Not Show Vaccine Proof

Celebrity Cruises releases huge annual " Wave" deal

However, with the change, passengers over 16 who opt not to show proof they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 will be subject to additional protocols, at their own cost, including:

  • Arriving for embarkation with a negative PCR test taken within the 72-hour period ahead of arrival at the terminal
  • Antigen test at the pier.
  • Mid-cruise antigen test.
  • Antigen test at the end of the cruise.
  • Masks will be required at all times on board except when eating or drinking.
  • Depending on local requirements, unvaccinated passengers may be restricted from disembarking at port calls.
  • Unvaccinated passengers will be restricted to certain seating areas on board in venues such as dining rooms.

And in addition to costing passengers onboard freedoms, not showing vaccine proof has a monetary price, too. Antigen tests are $178 and must be paid for by the passenger.

Meanwhile, vaccinated passengers and passengers under 16 will be free to move about the ship without masks.

It is unclear whether the change is CDC-approved, and the CDC declined to comment.

The adjustment won’t be in place across the country. According to Celebrity’s website, for cruises departing from ports outside of Florida, all passengers age 16 and older will still be required to be fully vaccinated. Starting Aug. 1, that age drops to 12.

Children who aren’t eligible to be vaccinated will receive a complimentary COVID test at the terminal before boarding.

How Many Passengers Are Vaccinated

While all crew members are vaccinated, Fain said the company won’t enforce vaccines among passengers leaving from a Florida port.

While the CDC had told cruise lines that they would need 95% of passengers and 95% of crew vaccinated in order to skip test sailings, the mandate contradicted a Florida state law banning businesses from requiring proof of vaccination.

According to Celebrity’s website, for cruises departing from ports outside of Florida, all passengers age 16 and older will still be required to be fully vaccinated. Starting Aug. 1, that age drops to 12.

On Friday, Fain told Yahoo Finance that he appreciates the work Florida Gov. DeSantis has done to advocate for the cruise industry, and added that the company will try and talk into a vaccination.

We recommend that people take vaccinations, and we really encourage it, but we do accept that there are some who dont, some children who cant get vaccines, Fain said. We will manage the process so that we will make sure we never go too far with unvaccinated people, and if necessary well close down a cruise. But we think thats all workable.
