Getting To The Old Town

The Old Town is around 2 miles from the cruise port. Although the walk to Corfu Town is pleasant and has a few interesting landmarks along the way, on summer hot days, a taxi might be preferable costing around â¬10.00 each way. Some cruise lines provide a shuttle to the Old Town. Depending on the cruise line, this can be a paid service. The public bus is the most affordable transportation to the Old Town, with tickets costing â¬1.90 but be aware that the cruise passenger will need cash to pay the driver.

Regular Vs Luxury Cruises

Perhaps you are on a budget, or maybe this trip has been in the making as all-out bucket list extravaganza. Deciding what luxuries you want and how much you want to spend will affect the quality of your trip.

  • Do you want a plain cabin, or do you want a suite?
  • Are you up for a white glove service or can you navigate your own trip plans?
  • Would you like all of your drinks, shore excursions, and gratuities to be included?

While regular cruises can cost half the price of luxury cruises or less, if you plan to enjoy a full bar every day, eat lobsters till you burst, and provide adequate tips to service people, you may end up paying closer to the luxury cruise price range anyway.

If you are an inexperienced cruiser, opting for the help of a cruise line travel agent can take a lot of the headache of planning your trip out of the equation.

After all, taking a cruise shouldnt be stressful, it should be the most relaxing and fun vacation yet!

Corfu Town

Corfu Town

The Old Town of Corfu is a cultural UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007. This ancient city is of high historical significance. Its strategic position in the Adriatic Sea played a crucial role in the 8th century BC. There are three forts located within the town that served to defend the maritime trading activity in Corfu and preserve the interests of Venice against the Ottoman Empire. As a fortified Mediterranean port, Corfus town and port constitute areas that are picturesque and merely authentic.

In the heart of the old town is situated the second largest square in Europe, the beautiful and green Spianada. This square is a gem next to Corfus famous street, Liston, built by the French in the 19th-century.

Best Things To Do In Corfu Greece On A Cruise Day

With several cruise lines sending their ships to include Corfu, Greece this summer, I thought Id update this article for those who simply want to know the best things to do in Corfu on your own.

My last Viking Ocean cruise aboard the Viking Star included a little more than a half-day in Corfu. That would be my first time setting foot in Greece.

Though a Greek island and not the mainland of Greece, it didnt matter: I was going to Greece! I just didnt know what things to do in Corfu.

Rather than travel by bus around the island on a cruise excursion, I wanted to explore Corfu on my own. From looking at the map, a shore excursion in tiny Corfu didnt seem necessary to me.

Sometimes, I forego ship-led shore excursionseven when theyre included. For me, especially on first-time visits, I like to simply wander the downtown or city center area on my own at my own pace.

Part of the travel experience for me is to mix among locals. And always include a stop for lunch.

I love to peek into tiny shops where trays of olives and hanging hams reign supreme, casting their salty, savory aroma from glass cases and wooden rafters out to the street. If Im really lucky, I find an out of the way café or restaurant that dishes up food that locals adore.

Heres how I spent my cruise day in Corfu on my own. Plus, a little background information of the island.

Whats In Athens To See And Do

You may recall the Parthenon from your art or history classes. This is the most famous monument in Athens. It sits atop a high table mountain, the Acropolis, towering over 500 ft above the surrounding area.

The Parthenon is a Greek temple dedicated to the Goddess Athena. Construction on the temple started in 447 BC when the Athenian Empire was at its peak of power.

In the Acropolis, its possible to check temples that are the epitome of fine Greek architecture.

The Parthenon is one of the finest structures of all. The fact that it is still standing today is a testament to the workmanship of the craftsmen who built it.

Within the Acropolis, dont forget to check the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechteion, the Theater of Dionysus and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus.

Also check the Agora, the main buildings for the administration and the justice system of Athenian democracy. Its home to an impressive Stoa and one of Greeces best-preserved temples.

Right in front of the Acropolis, you can also visit the Temple of Olympian Zeus. Its dedicated to the Greek god Zeus and the largest temple in Greece. Stop at the National Archaeological Museum to see a collection of ancient Greek art.

To have a better idea of the things you can see in the Acropolis, check both this mythological tour and this one-day tour.

If youre staying overnight, heres a list of places you might want to check at night in town.

Where Do The Cruse Ships Dock

Corfu guide, the island that is a magnet to cruise ships

My wife and I will be arriving to Corfu in April on a costa curse, Will it dock or tender into port?

Where is the port? How close is the port to the center of town?

Hi Rick, yes the ship should pull in to corfu harbour somewhere near the terminal customs office opposite the hotel atlantis on the main rd. across from the port.Once through passport control there is a motorcycle hire place across the road and a street adjacent to this if you walk up this street for about 100-150 yards you wil be entering the start of the center of corfu town and San Rocco square with all its shops, cafes ,bars and restaurants and spoilt for choice…..enjoy fella. 🙂

Cruise ships usually dock on the cruise ship pier, which is located on the farther end of the port for security reasons.

BUT, there is a bus transporting passengers to the port entrance and there is also another free bus that can take you to the center of the old Corfu town, saving you valuable time, so that you can walk around and enjoy your time here

No need for free buses on your cruise wasting time embarking waiting for the bus to fill and then disembarking when you can walk up the street as suggested and be in the center in 5 mins. or so,one thing though it will be an experience crossing the main port rd with all its traffic…….enjoy 🙂
