Why Is Key West Dropped

Its a complex situation in Key West, with locals calling for a ban on cruise ships. In fact, in November 2020, residents voted to ban the largest cruise ships, including a limit of daily cruise ship visits at 1,500 passengers, with no cruise ships with 1,300 passengers being allowed to dock, and giving priority to cruise ships with the best health environmental records.

Despite the vote being a success to limit and ban the largest ships, it was all overturned by Florida Govoner Ron DeSantis in summer 2021. Bill 1194 was signed, resulting in what would have been 94% of the banned cruise ships to continue calls.

However, it has not been that simple as there has been an even stronger push to ban or limit the vessels in Key West. The Safer Cleaner Ships movement has been set up with the aim to protect the local reefs and environment.

Florida Cruise Ships Could Sail Again By The Summer Desantis Says

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. A day after a federal judge heard arguments in Floridas request for a preliminary injunction against federal restrictions that have idled the cruise industry during the COVID-19 pandemic, Gov. Ron DeSantis expressed optimism that he would be successful in court and cruise ships would set sail again by the summer.

If we are successful in the courts, Im willing to bet anyone that people are going to want to cruise from the state of Florida, DeSantis said during a Thursday news conference in Ormond Beach.

Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody, backed by DeSantis, filed a lawsuit last month challenging limits imposed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Moody argues that the CDC has violated a law known as the Administrative Procedure Act by issuing guidelines that have kept cruise ships from sailing.

We had a great hearing I think, by and large, reports I heard in Federal Court yesterday, DeSantis said. We think that we got our points across, we think the judge was receptive. I mean, well see what happens.

There is also an ongoing fight over so-called vaccine passports.

Recently, DeSantis signed a bill that makes permanent a ban on COVID-19 vaccine passports, putting him at odds with at least one cruise line.

The CDC said ships are able to sail for the first time since March 2020 if they can prove that at least 98% of the crew and 95% of passengers are fully vaccinated.

Cruise Lines Could Be Fined

Three cruise lines could be in some trouble related to Floridas vaccine passport ban. The Orlando Sentinal reports that the Florida Department of Health released a list that features 120 cases of businesses in Florida that may have broken the vaccine passport law.

Currently, these listed cases are under review, and that includes three cruise lines. Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, and Disney Cruise Line are all on the list as they operate cruise ships that depart from Florida. Cruise ships operate out of four different Florida homeports, including PortMiami, Port Canaveral, Port Everglades, and Port of West Palm Beach.

Governor Ron DeSantis signed the legislation to ban vaccine passports in Florida in May 2021, a month after the emergency order was issued. This means no business operating in the state can request a person to show proof of vaccination.

If a company does ask for proof, there could be a fine of up to $5,000 per violation, which could add up depending on the number of people.

Since the ban on vaccine passports has been in place and cruise ships have restarted operations from Florida, the way around the ban is for cruise passengers to show their vaccination status freely.
