Cruise Ship Route Out Of New Orleans

Sailing out on NCL Getaway on 27th Dec after 2 nights in NO. Would like to know what route the cruise ships take to get to sea. Is there any recommendations on things to look for when sailing away?

Cheers

They travel down the Mississippi River to the Gulf. If you look at a map of Louisiana, the extreme southeastern part looks like a peninsula. The Mississippi River runs through that peninsula. For the most part, this area is home to little towns that are most accurately described as fishing villages. In the 1990s and earlier, these were vibrant small towns. But the region has been ravaged by hurricanes, and younger people have left for more opportunities near the city. So, theres really not much to see.

As you leave the terminal in New Orleans, position yourselves on the port side of the ship where you will have great views of the city skyline and of St. Louis Cathedral. You will also pass the Domino sugar refinery and the site of the Battle of New Orleans In December sunset is about 5p.m,. so for the rest of the trip down river you will mostly be seeing the lights of oil rigs and of other boat traffic.

Thanks for replying.

We sail out at 4:00pm so will have an hour which will hopefully allow us some views before darkness falls.

Will read up on the Battle of

I have a list of questions but will save them for later!

#4 makes a good point about the level of the River, and the views. Even with lower water, the upper decks should be good viewing points.

Enjoy!

NEW ORLEANS RIVER CRUISE!! Creole Queen River Boat Jazz Brunch & HOP ON HOP OFF Bus Tour

I have traveled all over the world and New Orleans is definitely one of the coolest cities in the world. If you have the chance definitely port out of New Orleans.

Visited: Apr 22, 2018

Great port and an awesome city! Make sure you arrive a day earlier so you can enjoy some of the finest cuisine in the world. I love New Orleans! I maybe a little biased because its my hometown.

Loved New Orleans! First timers! Stayed in Homewood Suites downtown and took the trolleys everywhere. Awesome time!!!

Visited: Feb 12, 2017

New Orleans is an amazing city. We were lucky to be able spend some time in town after the cruise. We got a deal on a room at the Westin with some incredible views of the Mississippi. Its also just off Canal St., and because of that its right on the Canal Street trolley lines that can connect you everywhere. Stopped at Ruby Slipper for breakfast. Use an app to pre-book your place in line or it will be a long wait. Food was fantastic. You must visit, the French Market, Frenchman Street, The Garden District, and of course Bourbon Street. For the garden district take a quick tour on the st Charles cable car and then go back for specific parts such as the Audubon park, etc.

Ships Resatrt Despite Setbacks

Despite this setback, Carnival Cruise Line continues with its phased-in return to service, and hopefully, New Orleans will be ready for the next scheduled departure on September 12. That voyage will be a seven-day Western Caribbean cruise.

Eight Carnival ships have already resumed operations, including out of Florida, Texas, California, and Washington State. It has not been all smooth sailing as Carnival Panorama, based out of Long Beach, California, is suffering from a maximum cruising speed issue. 27 people also became infected on the Carnival Vista recently on a cruise out of Galveston.

The cruise line continues to follow the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , guidelines, and updates have been made to its protocols to keep everyone onboard its ships protected. This will be the same for Carnival Glory once the ship eventually begins sailings out of New Orleans.

Carnival Glory is among the first ships to receive its new red, white and blue livery and just recently completed a dry dock in France. The ship is 110,000 gross tons and has a guest passenger capacity of 2,980 at double occupancy, However, once the vessel resumes sailings, she will sail at around 70% capacity just like other ships that have already restarted.

Where do cruises leave from New Orleans?

The Port of New Orleans is located at 1350 Port of New Orleans Place. Cruise ships will leave from either one of two terminals: Julia Street and Erato Street .Once the cruise ships leave the Port of New Orleans, itll take about 7-8 hours to travel along the Mississippi before getting to the Gulf of Mexico and international waters.

Where is the best location to stay in New Orleans?

Any of the hotels within walking distance are great places to stay. However, our top recommendation is the Hilton New Orleans Riverside, located at 2 Poydras St.Why that one? First, it is super close to the cruise port . But the amazing thing about them is while many hotels charge extra for the park & cruise packages, this hotel automatically gives you a 20% discount on your room just for being a cruise traveler. They also provide you with cruise parking at a heavily discounted rate of $13 per night , which is a steal. They dont have a shuttle for the port, but being so close to the terminal you arent going to need it.

How Long is a Typical Cruise from New Orleans?

The average length of a cruise shipping out from New Orleans is 7 nights. There are a select few that are either shorter or longer, but 7 nights is the typical cruise length.

Carnival Cruise Lines on Thursday extended the moratorium on sailings from the Port of New Orleans through August, despite the resumption of some sailings starting in July from Florida and Texas.
