Well freely admit it: We used to be big ship cruisers.
Wed stand on the railing of our megaship, cocktail in-hand, and watch as a ship less than a quarter of our size pulled up next to us. The size differential was so great that we could actually see into the funnel of the ship, and peer down at the passengers on the deck scurrying around in anticipation of their arrival into port.
Of course, the natural reaction to a sight like that is to develop a sense of smug superiority. Little did we know, however, that the guests on the small ship had a smug sense of superiority too because they knew what we didnt.
With their more intimate atmosphere, increased levels of service, flexibility in their itineraries and unique personalities, small ships have a tendency to win cruisers over almost instantly. Even experienced cruisers arent immune to their charms including us. After sailing on big ships dozens of times, our first small ship cruises were genuinely surprising experiences that raised the bar for what we could expect from an oceangoing cruise.

While this answer will likely change as newer, bigger, fancier cruise ships set sail the Biggest Cruise Ship in the world as of April 2011 is the Allure of the Seas operated by Royal Caribbean. It is approximately 50 millimeters longer than its sister ship, the Oasis of the Seas also operated by Royal Caribbean. This size difference is totally accidental as both ships have the same design. The builders attribute the size difference to the temperature of the metal in the hull but really, for all intents and purposes, they are the same size. I mean, how often have we collectively heard the excuse, the cold makes them shrink? I had the privilege of seeing this ship up close and personal while docked at Costa Maya on the Mexican Riviera. You might think a 2,000-passenger cruise ship is “small” if you’re comparing it to Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas, a 5,518-passenger mega-ship. “Small-ship cruising” is actually a completely different class of sailing, encompassing everything from a yacht with a few dozen passengers to ships carrying as many as 1,300 guests.
Small ships distinguish themselves from mainstream cruise ships in more ways than just physical size — which allows them to sail into small harbors and shallow channels. Lower passenger counts make for easier embarkation and an absence of queues.
