Cozumel Cruises To Return In Summer 2021 Despite Opposition To New Cruise Dock
Covid caused mass-shutdown for the cruise industry in 2020. However, with restrictions easing and some sense of normality beginning to return.
Mexico is a hugely popular destination for cruises, with almost 9 million visitors arriving via cruise ships in 2019. The Mexican Caribbean is home to the most popular ports, with two-thirds of the countrys entire cruise activity taking place in the state of Quintana Roo. The most-visited ports here are Mahahual and topping the list Cozumel, which offers great attractions for visitors.Given the huge amount of cruise dollars ending up in Cozumel, and the islands reliance on that income, its understandable that Cozumel would be incredibly keen to restart cruise visits. And it looks like thats exactly whats about to happen.
Which Cruise Ships Go Here
Many of the major cruise lines have itineraries that include stops at Cancun or Playa del Carmen. A few of the biggest cruise lines that stop in Playa del Carmen are Fred Olsen Cruise Lines, MSC Cruises, Lindblad Expeditions and Princess Cruises. However, there are many other options available in terms of dates, ships, days in port and at sea when it comes to Cancun.
Cancun Isnt Far From Other Ports
Ever notice that ships seem to stick to the same area on their cruises? A ship is highly unlikely to leave Miami, head to Cozumel, and then head to the Bahamas. The time and expense of sailing the ship back and forth is too much. Thats why cruise lines love to have ports clustered relatively near each other. It makes it easy to sail overnight without burning a ton of fuel. With Cancun being fewer than 50 miles from Cozumel its about as close as you can get to a second port. That would give cruise lines three ports within close distance of each other Costa Maya, Cozumel, and Cancun allowing them to create Mexican getaways all next to each other without burning a ton of fuel.

Cancunis one of the most preferred destinations in Mexico here you will find all the modern amenities and luxuries of a first class vacation oasis coupled with a plethora of recreational activities and historic archeological sites like Chichen Itza. Ports Of Call: Cancun
Cancun is one of the most popular beach destinations in North America, but cruise ships dont actually dock in or near Cancun. In fact, the nearest genuine port of call to Cancun is Playa del Carmen. Playa del Carmen is a great place to spend time in and of itself, with ancient Mayan ruins and underground passageways nearby. Stunning beaches can be enjoyed right in Playa del Carmen, but if your ship docks here and youd like to see the far more touristy and bustling Cancun, it isnt a major hassle to get over there. However, if your time in Playa del Carmen is limited then it would be best to plan on seeing the sights right in and around this smaller and more intimate version of its neighbor up the coast.

Cancun Is Already A Desirable Destination
Each year, about 4 million Americans visit Cancun. In other words, its already a popular place to visit. Thats a big hurdle that the cruise lines wouldnt have to overcome. For example, tell someone you are headed to Cancun and they picture white sand beaches, electric blue water, and a lot of fun. But imagine you told them you are headed to Progreso. Will most people know where it is or what to expect?
Thats not a knock on Progreso. It simply illustrates how having a destination thats already desirable means the cruise lines dont have to work as hard to get passengers excited about an itinerary with Cancun in it. Passengers know what to expect, and theres already a lot of positive images of the spot in peoples minds.
Cruise Ships Still Making Ports Of Call In Cancun
So ive looked on icruise.com and none of the cruise itineraries have any cruises that stop in Cancun. They stop in all the places near it like Cozumel, Progreso, and Costa Maya, but not Cancun. So are cruise ships still stopping at Cancun? If not, why arent they? If they are, what cruise lines make ports of call in Cancun?
Exactly! They have never been there. We do see them sailing by when staying in the hotel zone. Cozumel as mentioned is a huge cruise ship destination. I stopped there on a cruise almost 40 years ago haha! You can go to Playa Del Carmen via Cozumel as well by ferry. They used to stop close by and had tenders bring people to the wharf by Royal Playa del Carmen. Not sure if they still do that. But nothing in Cancun.
I thought they anchored and had shuttles many many years ago in Cancun. Thought I remembered something like that when i was a kid
I may have forgotten but have been going for almost 40 years and only recall seeing the ships pass Cancun going to Cozumel. Some did anchor off the coast at Playa and send passengers in on small boats but no longer do that. They go to Cozumel and send those going on mainland tours by chartered ferries.
