Royal Caribbean has just come to dominate the ocean-going cruise scene by surpassing longtime industry leader, Carnival Cruise Line, in terms of its fleet size. Upon taking delivery of its new Odyssey of the Seas on March 31, Royal Caribbean boosted its ship count to 25 operational vessels edging out Carnival, which is currently sailing with 24.
Prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting global shutdown of cruising, Carnival boasted 27 vessels, while Royal Caribbean was sailing with 26. But, the financial toll of such an extended pause in operations prompted both companies to downsize their fleets as part of cost-cutting efforts.
Carnival sold off some of its older Fantasy Class ships in July 2020. Carnival Fascination was purchased by Century Harmony Cruises and renamed Century Harmony, while Carnival Fantasy, Carnival Inspiration and Carnival Imagination suffered the more ignominious fate of being sent to a scrapyard in Turkey. The cruise line also took delivery of one new ship, the 5,200-passenger , in December of last year.
While the lines first Quantum Ultra Class ship, Spectrum of the Seas, which debuted in 2019, sails out of Shanghai and serves the burgeoning Chinese cruise market, Odyssey of the Seas will be dedicated to sailing in Europe and the U.S.

In short, until the new coronavirus hit, the year was shaping up to be a particularly exciting one for big-ship lovers who always want to be on the latest-and-greatest vessels.
The excitement, alas, got squashed with the arrival of COVID. But the Year of the Big-Ship Bonanza hasnt been canceled. Its just been postponed.
Already, one of the vessels MSC Grandiosa is sailing again in the Mediterranean, albeit on cruises that only are open to residents of Europes Schengen countries.

Wonder of the Seas was originally penciled in to be sailing from China. In April, details about tours departing from Shanghai and Hong Kong were released to the public, and the ship was set to be the first of its kind to be homeported in China. The swiss-based cruise line will be focussing on seasonal and immersive experiences when it comes to food and beverage onboard. MSC World Europa will feature 13 dining venues, including six specialty restaurants and three ample restaurant buffets on board, including a brand-new location open 24/7.
