Each of these ships belongs to the Vision class or Radiance class, two families of older vessels whose smaller sizes allow them to explore more adventurous destinations, such as Alaska and Cyprus. But they also sail the Caribbean, offering Royal Caribbean loyalists a more intimate experience than the fleet’s larger ships.

On most ships, expect small, simple cabins, but plenty of memorable excursions, like snorkeling in Borneo or hiking an ice field in Patagonia. But some of its recent fleet additions are truly luxe, from its two polar-sailing expedition ships, National Geographic Endurance and National Geographic Resolution, to the elegant Oberoi Philae, which sails the Nile. Each sailing has an expedition team made up of experts in fields like marine biology and photography.

Now the brand new cruise line – the first British one to be launch since 2010 – has announced plans for a second ship to join its fleet next year.

Ambition will enter service in 2023, and like Ambience she will offer plenty of luxurious amenities for guests including a wellness centre, casino, theatre, gym, shops, and highlights such as a card room, craft studio and library.

Eagle-eyed cruise fans may actually recognise the cruise ship already, as she was bought from Costa Crociere, where she had been operating as AIDAMira. The ship has also previously sailed under names including Mistral, Grand Mistral and Costa neoRiviera.

Of course under Ambassador Cruise Line she will be receiving an extensive refurbishment – so passengers can expect a completely new look and experience!

Small Ship Line #: Seabourn

Seabourns six ships feature fewer than 300 suites eachbut they leverage that small size into access at some of the worlds most beloved yacht ports: St. Tropez in the south of France the Greek island of Kos and popular large ports like Dubrovnik and Monte Carlo. Michelin-starred chef Thomas Keller designs specialty menus on the ships, and a partnership with UNESCO ensures shore excursions and sustainable tourism practices at some of the wildest and most wonderful destinations around the world. Later this year, the line will debut its first expedition ship, Seabourn Venture, with a sister ship to follow.

Large Ships: 25003499 Passengers

Large ships are similar to mega-ships, but aren’t quite so over the top. They are also packed with restaurants, cabin categories and activities — but perhaps not as many or not as cutting-edge as with the mega-ships. You’ll still have plenty of choices, with ships to accommodate families, couples, seniors and a wide variety of vacation styles and interests. Deals can be more plentiful on large ships than mega-ships, simply because they’re no longer the most sought-after vessels in a fleet.

For some lines, like Carnival and Royal Caribbean, large ships are not the newest but might have gotten newer amenities in a refurb for others, like Celebrity and Holland America, these ships are the biggest and newest. You’ll find these ships sailing around the world to the main cruise regions.

Large ships include the 3,000-passenger Carnival Sunshine, 2,850-passenger Celebrity Solstice, 3,080-passenger Crown Princess, 2,650-passenger Koningsdam and 2,500-passenger Disney Dream.

From Luxury Ocean Liners To Megaship Cruising

With the advent of large passenger jet aircraft in the 1960s, intercontinental travelers switched from ships to planes sending the ocean liner trade into a terminal decline. Certain characteristics of older ocean liners made them unsuitable for cruising duties, such as high fuel consumption, deep draught preventing them from entering shallow ports, and cabins designed to maximize passenger numbers rather than comfort.

Ocean liner services aimed at passengers ceased in 1986, with the notable exception of transatlantic crossings operated by the British shipping company Cunard Line, catering to a niche market of those who appreciated the several days at sea. In an attempt to shift the focus of the market from passenger travel to cruising with entertainment value, Cunard Line pioneered the luxury cruise transatlantic service on board the ocean liner Queen Elizabeth 2. International celebrities were hired to perform cabaret acts onboard and the crossing was advertised as a vacation in itself.
